Pompey could sign up to four 'quality' players as Kenny Jackett looks to strengthen his squad for his third assault on League One with the Blues.
Chief exec Mark Catlin says the dressing room does not need a major overhaul but Jackett has identified areas he wants to strengthen.
The number coming in could change if players leave - whether that is right-back Nathan Thompson not agreeing a new deal, or the likes of Matt Clarke or Jamal Lowe moving on to higher things and earning the club some money that could be used to but new faces.
Catlin told The News: 'If you look a those starting in terms of the loans (last season) it was one or two. The player who was a part of it and not re-signed is Nathan Thompson. ‘We've got two left-backs, and four centre-halves of which one is injured and one developing. Kenny has said it's an area we're looking at.
‘When you go through our squad we have a squad of 20-plus contracted next season. We don't want an excessive squad, but I stress resources are there.
‘We're looking for a mix of younger players we can develop aligned with two to four quality players in the areas Kenny has identified he wants to strengthen.
‘The other glaring flexibility is if a player leaves that is good for Portsmouth Football Club. We've got an agreed structure on money coming in. There's flexibility there.’
Meanwhile Pompey have reported season tickets being renewed at a healthy rate since they went on sale a week or so ago. A credit option has been introduced for people who cannot pay the whole cost up front - details are on www.portsmouthfc.co.uk
