Shrewsbury 1 Pompey 0: Frustration, but boss says Blues will get it right
Sunday, 4th Aug 2019 19:45 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kenny Jackett insists Pompey will find the right combination within their squad to start winning games - despite admitting to frustration at some aspects of their play in their opening day loss at Shrewsbury.

Ryan Giles' stunning strike was the difference between the sides and the Blues' bad day was completed when new man Ross McCrorie was sent off late on for a second yellow.

It puts Pompey on the back foot after the opening League One weekend but Jackett won't be panicking. Jackett told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'Shrewsbury are a big side. They played five at the back and we just couldn’t go past people in the final third. We didn’t create enough clear-cut opportunities for the amount of possession we had in both halves.

'Our final third play and crossing — particularly from the right — wasn’t of the standard required to give their defenders problems. Lee Brown did put some good balls into the box and was a threat, but we needed all four of our wide men to thrive.

'We dominated and got up towards their goal, but Shrewsbury’s game-plan seemed to be letting us advance and wasting a bit of time when they could. It worked and their lad scored a fantastic goal — it looked like it was heading for the top corner from the moment he struck it.

'When the ball was then rolling across their box in injury-time, you need that timing and desire, which wasn’t quite there. I do feel like we’ve got a good squad, but right now it’s all about this game and so we’re all frustrated.

'We still have to bed in, find the right combinations and get that cutting edge — and we’ve got the players capable of doing that.'

Pompey aim to put the loss behind them when they host Birmingham in the League Cup on Tursday, then they're at home to Tranmere for Fratton's first L1 game on Saturday.
