Pitman: I'm not the only player who can't get in my team

Brett Pitman says he's not alone in struggling to get into his club's starting XI - but is determined to carry on doing all he can to get selected.

The club captain was top scorer two seasons ago and did well last season after a spell out of the team - and has started his third campaign at Fratton Park again largely on the outside looking in.

But he scored the only goal of the game in the Football League Trophy win over Crawley at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening, and later spoke of his frustration at not having a regular place in the side.

He told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'It’s been frustrating so far for me, but there are players up and down the country in exactly the same situation.

'All you can do is make sure you take your opportunity when you get one — hopefully I’ve done that in this game. The gaffer doesn’t need me to score in these games to show what I can do and I think my record speaks for itself.'

Pitman was delighed to get the winner and paid tribute to Brandon Haunstrup, whose corner he converted, adding: 'It’s obviously really pleasing to come on, score the goal and get the result that we all wanted. The manager had told me to do what I normally do. There wasn’t really any specific message for me.

'Brandon had put in a couple of really good balls just before that one and luckily it fell right for me. I gambled by going across the front of my man and was able to hook it in. It went in quite nicely — I’ll certainly take it.'
