I want to start for Pompey - and score more goals

Ronan Curtis wants to keep starting for Pompey - and scoring for Pompey.

The winger was back in the first XI at Bristol Rovers last Saturday and repaid boss Kenny Jackett's faith in him with a goal that put Pompey 2-0 up before they allowed Rovers to fight back for a point.

The Irishman has surely done enough to keep his place for Saturday's visit of Oxford and he told the club website: 'I haven't had one (a start) for a few weeks, so I was glad to get on the scoresheet and help the lads out.

'John (Marquis) put in a great cross and I wasn’t going to miss from that far out. I’ve been working hard in training and was pleased to get the chance. I want to be in the team and am always looking to get goals and assists to help get the results we want.

'You go through spells when you’re in top form and then hit a drought, so hopefully this is the start of some good form for me.'

Curtis is hoping upcoming home games against Oxford and Southend see Pompey turn good spells of football into consistent results after the disappointment of taking only a point from the Rovers game.

He told the site: 'We’d battered a good Bristol Rovers side for most of the game and deserved to come away with the win. But they scored a late equaliser and that’s really tough to take, especially because it’s an own-goal that’s come off Ross McCrorie’s knee, the bar and then Craig’s head.

'The luck’s just not there for us at the moment, but we have to keep doing what we’re doing and I’m sure things will start falling for us. I felt that we linked up really well, from the defence to the front four. We passed and moved, creating quite a few chances. It was an all-round good performance.

'We’re still in the early stages of the season. We’ve got the players and staff who are capable of turning it around.'
