Should we have a new song? '2-1 to the Portsmouth...'

They used to sing '1-0 to the Arsenal' but now perhaps a chorus of '2-1 to the Portsmouth' is required. It's a scoreline the Blues recorded for a third time in three different competitions when they overcame AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at Fratton Park.

John Marquis came off the bench to turn one point into three for Pompey after Joe Pigott had cancelled out Marcus Harness's first half strike. Marquis has scored in each of the three 2-1 victories Pompey have recorded in the past week and a bit.

Jackett told the Pompey website: 'It was a different kind of match to the ones against Ipswich and Wycombe, but certainly no easier to get the win. Wimbledon could sit off with their three at the back and are hard to get past — that was their game-plan.

'We persevered and it was a really good winner, with Ronan’s cross and John’s flick into the corner of the net. It’s important you keep driving on right to the end and we want to keep being the team who score the late goals and create chances.

'I was always expecting a hard test and we’re pleased to come through to end what’s been a positive week for us. We’ve won three games 2-1 in different competitions, but this one is obviously the most important to us.

'Momentum needs to be built in the second half of the season and this result will give the players confidence.'

Cameron McGeehan made his Blues debut in the win over Wimbledon while it was a home bow for Steve Seddon. Both impressed, and with Jack Whatmough and Brandon Haunstrup both on the bench, suddenly there's a new level of competition for places in the line-up.

Next up Pompey travel to bottom placed Bolton in the league next Saturday.

Pompey: Bass; Bolton (Haunstrup 71), Burgess, Raggett, Seddon; McGeehan, Naylor; Harness, Cannon (Marquis 71), Curtis; Harrison. Subs not used: MacGillivray, Whatmough, Close, Evans, Hawkins

Referee: Trevor Kettle

Attendance: 18,417 (836 away fans)
