Pompey v Barnsley: Never mind the money - we just want to win
Friday, 24th Jan 2020 22:18 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kenny Jackett says beating Barnsley to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup would mean more to his players than the money the victory would make for the club.

There's £180,000 to be won by whichever side progresses when the Blues take on the Tykes, who pipped them to League One promotion last season, but Jackett told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'I understand the financial aspect of it has to be considered, but for the guys at the training ground it’s just about progressing.

'We’ve had plenty of cup games already this season and they certainly do get bigger the further you go. We want to win games and build confidence — it’s a good habit to get into. We also want to entertain our supporters.

'We’re taking on a Championship side on Saturday and the potential for what lies after that is our motivation. Barnsley have been very good since the new manager’s been in there and looked effective, especially going forward.

'But these cup ties are one-off games and players can produce big performances against sides from a few levels up. That’s the appeal of them. It’s a test for us and one we should enjoy — it would be great to get through in a cup competition for the second time this week.'

Steve Seddon, a revelation at left-back since joining Pompey on loan from Birmingham, believes his new Blues can get the better of the men from Oakwell. He told the club site: 'It wouldn't be the biggest upset if we won on Saturday because I don’t think we’re too far off that level.

'I was a West Ham fan growing up and remember the run we had in 2006 when we got to the final against Liverpool. That was a big FA Cup memory, but then my first experience of playing in it last season wasn’t so good. We lost to Plymouth with a goal in the 94th minute when I was at Stevenage and that was a tough one to take.'
