Pompey boss happy to be in the mix in a very open League One

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett has long been saying League One is wide open this season - and the Blues' win at Lincoln, which saw them spend 24 hours in the top six, has done nothing to convince him otherwise.

It was the Blues' third straight league win - and seventh victory in January - although their position in the play-off places proved shortlived as Sunderland - who visit Fratton on Saturday - leapfrogged them with a win over Tranmere on Wednesday night.

Jackett told the club website moving into the top six didn't mean too much at this stage, saying: 'It’s the first time this season, but the division is still open – I’ve been saying it for a while, but I still feel it’s the case.

'I’m pleased to say that we’re very much still in it, although there are a high number of teams that can get into that top six. It’s a cracking game to look forward to against Sunderland on Saturday now and both clubs will be doing everything they can to get into those promotion places.'

Jackett felt Pompey deserved the win at Lincoln in a game that was no classic, adding: 'The bobbly pitch made it tough for both sides, particularly in the opening half when there was a lack of cutting edge. But we got the vital first goal with a terrific free-kick from Ronan and I felt we were the stronger team after the break.

'Another goal always seemed to be coming and we deserved it, although it took us a little while to get it. I’m delighted that John was able to put the penalty away and I felt that we were the dominant side overall.

'It was a good, hard-working performance from everyone and we closed down well from the front – I’m not just talking about the back four. That solidity is a big part of any side that wins promotion and we want to keep consistent partnerships.'
