Are the odds so far in favour of Pompey at Tranmere that they're actually against them?
Friday, 7th Feb 2020 20:22 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey head for Birkenhead to face Tranmere on their less-than-perfect pitch with Blues fans wondering how long the recent winning run can continue.

Their 2-0 success over Sunderland last week was Pompey's eighth straight win in all competitions, even if only four of those have come in League One.

A theme that's dominated the build-up to the visit to Prenton Park has been this: if Pompey's form is so good, and Tranmere's so poor, you just know what's going to happen, and it's not going to be a draw, nor an away win.

That's an understandable worry given Pompey's propensity over the years to lose games everyone is certain they'll win, but it's a trait they should focusing on avoiding at Tranmere.

Pompey head into the weekend in sixth place but the whole top of the table remains seriously congested. For example, they're only three points behind second place, but only three points in front of ninth.

Typically Kenny Jackett was thinking about only this game - and not any sequence of results - as he talked to the media before leading his squad to the north-west.

He told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'Breaking any kind of record is great, but whatever run you’re on, winning the next game is always the most important thing. It doesn’t change whether you are at the top or bottom of the table and you’re just desperate to win on the Saturday.

'We’ve enjoyed some consistency in team selection and formation, while the players have pulled together as a unit — those in and out of the side. There should be some confidence in the group, but that can only take you so far and we have to stay humble to earn three points at Tranmere.

'I’m not too big on looking back at what’s gone before, so we’ll focus on this match and then the Coventry game comes around quickly. Our next opponents will do everything they can to preserve their League One status after getting into this division last season.'

Meanwhile the home game against Rochdale - originally scheduled for Saturday Feb 29 - has been brought forward to Friday February 28 (7.45pm) following the scheduling of the FA Cup fifth round tie with Arsenal for Monday March 2.
