Trophy isn't No1 priority for Pompey - but they do want to get to Wembley

A return to Wembley is a game away - and just as they did in last year's EFL Trophy semi-final, Pompey are putting out a strong side to try to ensure they make it.

At Bury last year, Kenny Jackett fielded a side much stronger than the one which had got the Blues that far - and they duly won at Gigg Lane to set up the final with Sunderland, which they won on penalties.

Now with the final in view again Jackett is adopting the same approach - even if some fans would rather see a number of key players rested with a busy run of league games coming up.

Jackett told the Pompey website: 'We’ll be working with the same group that we had at the weekend against Shrewsbury. Andy (Cannon) is back with us, but I’m not going to risk him. He will be fit and available to travel up to Fleetwood.

'We’ve got a big game on Saturday, but right now all of my focus is on facing Exeter on Tuesday night. There will be some changes because that’s needed with the hectic run of games we’re on at the moment.

'The side will be fresh and have the right amount of energy, but we’ll be going strong because we’re one step from Wembley.'

Jackett said the trophy was not Pompey's priority but was important.

He added: 'Winning the competition last season was great and it was a fantastic day for the club at Wembley. Now it’s come around very quickly again and we’re one step from getting back there, so we’ll be giving everything.

'Everyone knows that reaching the Championship is our priority, but it’s a real opportunity for both teams.'
