Pompey ready for Plymouth test after 18-day break

Pompey are ready to swing back into League One action at Plymouth on Wednesday evening after coming through their latest spate of Covid cases.

The squad has the green light to get back into action after the club's last three games, against AFC Wimbledon, Exeter and Oxford, were postponed because of the number of cases.

Blues boss Danny Cowley told the official website: 'We seem to have come through it, which is obviously very good news. We’re certainly moving in the right direction. The change in restrictions from 10 days of isolation to seven has also helped some players return to training quicker.

'We’re certainly hopeful that we’ve managed to navigate through that difficult period because it’s amazing how it can spread like wildfire once the virus gets into the building. It’s been frustrating because we’ve obviously had to postpone three games when we were on a really good run of form.

'But you look at the number of matches that have been called off – right up to the Premier League – and realise it’s a nationwide problem. It has been one thing after the other for us this season and I do feel like a firefighter at times – even coming in this morning and seeing the training pitches underwater!

'That’s just the cards we’ve been dealt, but the good news is that everyone’s off their sickbed now and we’ve been able to get a good session into them. We’re in a position where we can fulfil the fixture and have the necessary number of players available, although the 'return to play' protocols mean we will have some unavailable.”

Plymouth are fourth in the table and in good form. Cowley told the site: 'I went to watch them play Charlton before Christmas, while Nicky and I saw them at Cheltenham on Boxing Day.

'There’s no doubt that they’re a very strong team and also have a really nice balance to their squad, with a lot of round pegs in round holes. They have a real threat on the counter-attack and can get in behind you. There’s a lot to admire about them.

'We certainly anticipate playing a strong team at this level and understand the challenge in front of us, but we’re looking forward to it.'
