Pompey must not be afraid to be creative

George Hirst says Pompey must not be afraid to get their creative types on the ball as they look to take the confidence from back-to-back wins into a couple of road trips.

He said the difference between Saturday's first half showing against Doncaster - when they came off goalless - and the second half display - in which they scored four - was stark and had a lot to do with believing in their own strong points.

They'll need to show more of the spirit that saw off Doncaster when they go to Crewe on Saturday and Shrewsbury on Tuesday - two sides they beat at home to kick the season off with six points from six.

Hirst told the Pompey website: 'It (the Doncaster game) was a really big win for us — our second in a week — and I was delighted to score another goal. When we went in at the break, we knew that we needed to take our performance up another 10 per cent or so.

'It wasn’t particularly great in the first half and we knew that there were extra gears for us to move into. But after the break I thought we displayed a real fight and a determination to prove a point to some of the teams around us in the table.

'I think that we went too long when with the players we had out on the pitch, we were good enough to play some football. The manager said that we needed to trust ourselves more and that’s what we did to come away with a 4-0 victory.

'We were so much better in the second half and were able to get our most creative players on the ball. With them being able to come into the game a bit more, that gave me and Tyler Walker a chance up front.'
