Cowley makes Pompey loan pledge as London trip is announced

Danny Cowley insists he does not want to rely too heavily on loanees in the new season.

The Blues did lean heavily on borrowed players last term but Cowley wants his team to be built around permanent signings.

Pompey have been stung in the past by coming to rely on loan recruits who have then been recalled or moved on at short notice.

Fans have also questioned the reliance on temporary additions - which admittedly is aomething an increasing number of clubs do these days.

But Cowley has told The News: "Loans can’t be the core - and hopefully that won’t be the case again. We want our loans to be the icing and cherry on the cake.

"If we want sustained success we are going to have to have a core who are your own players. They can then give us a platform to then recruit from."

Meanwhile Pompey have addedLeyton Orient to their list of pre-season opponents. They will go to Brisbane Road on Tuesday, July 19 (7pm kick-off) to face the League Two side formerly managed by Kenny Jackett.

This adds to fixtures with Gillingham, Havant & Waterlooville, Gosport and Bognor on the Blues' pre-season itinerary.

Pompey say they will also confirm a Fratton Park fixture and a game during their Spanish training camp in due course.
