Griffiths and Pigott impress on Pompey bows
Sunday, 17th Jul 2022 22:00 by pompey-fans.com staff

Danny Cowley was pleased with new recruits Josh Griffiths and Joe Pigott on their debuts in a 2-1 win at Gillingham.

Reeco Hackett and Connor Ogilvie got the goals that defeated the Gills but it was the new boys who were centre of attention for the 200-plus Pompey fans present.

Cowley said afterwards: "There are some new relationships and partnerships, along with a slight change of system for us. When you add in the warm weather and a sticky pitch, there were definitely some challenges that we had to deal with.

'But I felt that the players adapted well. You have to find a way sometimes in football and that’s what we did. I’ve been pleased with our effort and application, although we’re still looking to bring some pace and power into the front end of the pitch, which we’re working hard to do.

'It was lovely to have Reeco back and to see him score what was a well-worked goal. It was a lovely pass from Michael and a calm, composed finish. We also enjoyed seeing Joe on the pitch for the first time. You can see that if the ball is played into him, he’ll look after it for us.

'Josh was another one making his debut and these new relationships we’re seeing is what pre-season is all about. On top of all that, it’s always a positive if you can score a late winner and we’re pleased to come away with the result.'

Pompey host Coventry next Saturday.
