Mousinho mindset is positive, but can Pompey take Valley form into Millwall?
Thursday, 19th Feb 2026 20:02 by Pompey-fans.com staff

Given that Pompey have not won two games in a row since last Easter, it's safe to assume few fans will be getting carried away after the midweek win at Charlton.

It felt like a big result in the scheme of things but too often this season, the Blues have looked like they're ready to go on a run only to fall short next time out.

So with visits to Millwall on Saturday and Wrexham on Tuesday to come, it's not surprising to hear John Mousinho also talking of the need to be level-headed about their latest win.

It will mean plenty if it proves the first in a little run of wins - even if that's a run of two - but will mean little if no points are forthcoming in the next week or so.

The boss told the Pompey website: 'It was a strange week when we played well and lost those two matches (Preston and Sheff Utd) – we created better chances against Sheffield United than when we put three away at Charlton.

'We produced two of our stronger performances and got nothing, which meant it got tighter at the bottom than we would have liked. So we tried to stay calm, while addressing some of the issues we’ve had and thankfully came away with the points.

'We always try to stay balanced as a staff and make sure that we can roll into the next game with a positive mindset. Last year we had to rely hugely on our home form to keep us in this league and maybe we wouldn’t have won that one at Charlton last year.

'We’ve got two more on the road coming up and a better away record can give us a good platform, although it’s going to be tough at Millwall. They’re a strong side and have had a brilliant season. After consolidating in the Championship they are now a definite promotion contender.

'After having their own injury crisis when we beat them at Fratton Park in November, Alex Neil has really got them going.'

Mousinho also gave an update on some of injured stars - who currently number an unlucky 13.

He said: 'Andre Dozzell is having the scan on his ankle this week and so we’ll know more after that. Harvey Blair has had a few niggles that set him back, but he's trained fully again and so we’ll see how he is for the weekend.

'Adrian Segečić was on the bench on Tuesday because of his dead leg. We’re just letting that settle down and he should be fine for Millwall. We’ll try to get Conor Chaplin out next week, with a view to him possibly being available for the Hull game.

'We’ve also got that one pencilled in for Hayden Matthews because we’re now building up to him getting back to full training. That’s the same target for Conor Shaughnessy, although we’ll be a bit more cautious with him because it was a muscular injury as opposed to a contact one.

'Thomas Waddingham has had a couple of setbacks and because of the amount of time he’s been out, we’re just going to be patient.'
