Why there was no celebrating for Pompey after Bolton win
Sunday, 31st Oct 2021 21:38 by pompey-fans.com staff

One win down - another one needed. That's Pompey boss Danny Cowley's outlook as he plots to build on victory over Bolton when the Blues take on Cheltenham on Tuesday night.

He was heartened by the 1-0 success over the Trotters courtesy of John Marquis' goal. But he knows it is vital to follow it up with another three points at home to Cheltenham.

He told the media after Saturday's win: '“I don’t think we’ll have a more important three points all season — although we might find a more free-flowing performance. We knew we’d let everyone down the last time we were here and that hurt everyone’s pride, as well as the confidence.

'When you’re in that place, you have to dig deep and find a way through. I felt that’s exactly what we did. We came out for the second half with more intensity and aggression, got the goal and that gave us more confidence.

'It could have been a lot easier because we had a good dominance and a second would have lowered my blood pressure a little. That wasn’t to be and so we had to battle hard, but the most pleasing thing for me was the clean sheet.

'We’ve worked a lot on our defending this week. It’s an 11-man job and that started with John up front. Four points from the last six — and we were probably a bit freer last week — is a positive and we managed the game well against a good Bolton team.

'There was no celebrating in the dressing room afterwards, though, because we’re just focused on trying to back it up against Cheltenham on Tuesday night.'
