Dons should not have left Fratton with Cup victory
Wednesday, 15th Aug 2018 22:17 by pompey-fans.com staff

Christian Burgess said Pompey should have been capable of holding on to their Carabao Cup lead against Wimbledon and reaching the second round.

He headed Pompey into the lead in the Fratton Park first round tie but the Dons levelled and then won it late on through Anton Walkes' own goal.

Burgess told the club website: 'It’s a hard one to take for us and I felt that we should have held on really. There’s disappointment because we wanted to progress in the cup and Wimbledon just got on top of us at the end.

'It was a great ball in for our goal and it was just a tap-in for me really. You’d hope that we’d see it out from there. We had a couple of chances to hit them on the break, but we were unable to hold them off in the final few minutes.

'It was unfortunate for Anton — it’s just one of those things. We shouldn’t really linger on what happened.'
