Pompey boss on the factor that could have turned the south coast derby
Wednesday, 25th Sep 2019 22:16 by pompey-fans.com staff

For the first time in a long time, a south coast derby didn't go Pompey's way. Yet Kenny Jackett felt it could have been a different story had Pompey got the first goal in either half.

The Blues couldn't make early pressure pay in the first half at 0-0 - then failed to get a goal to spark a comeback at 2-0 despite early second half chances.

Southampton ran out 4-0 winners, a scoreline which flattered them but owed much to their clinical finishing.

Jackett told the club website: 'We needed the first goal — in both halves. We had lots of opportunities and couldn’t quite take them. So we need to create that number on a more regular basis. If we apply that kind of pressure, then goals will go in for us.

'We went with two up front and tried to bring the crowd into play — and they were magnificent by the way. The supporters got right behind the boys. It was a fantastic atmosphere and the passion on display is exactly what the Pompey fans are famous for.

'Southampton were ruthless on the break, but we couldn’t quite capitalise on the number of balls into the box and set-pieces we had. The scoreline says we lost 4-0, but it was a very open game and the outcome is slightly frustrating for us.

'But we didn’t want to come away having not had a go. We tried to play on the front foot and didn’t simply look to shut up shop. There were positives and we have to try to replicate them in the league, while settling some partnerships down.'
