Hirst: We need to go on showing people what we can do

George Hirst spoke of his delight at netting against his former club Rotherham - and now wants to help Pompey make sure they have a strong end to the season.

The loanee from Leicester City scored one after setting one up for Marcus Harness as the Millers were mullered at Fratton.

Hirst took the MoM plaudits and told the club website: 'It’s about as good as it gets,” beamed the Leicester loanee. “I thought that all the lads were excellent — from back to front.

'It’s always a little bit sweeter to score against your former club and I came off the back of a difficult year at Rotherham. I can’t put the blame on them for that because I probably wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t the right fit for me at the time, so it was nice to get on the scoresheet.

'We had control from minute one against a really direct side, which is something I probably knew better than most of the lads in the changing room. Robbo and I were both there last season and so we gave as much information as we could about what to expect.

'We dealt with that really well. Michael Smith is the best striker in the league and we kept him as quiet as possible. Then when we got on the ball, we were brave and aggressive going forward and needed that reaction after Cheltenham, which wasn’t acceptable.

'Now we want to finish the season strongly and show everyone what we can do. We're looking to pick up as many points as possible.'

Pompey host Lincoln on Friday and go to Morecambe on Easter Monday.
