Defender keen to protect Pompey's unbeaten record
Tuesday, 2nd Oct 2018 12:53 by pompey-fans.com staff

Jack Whatmough spoke of the impotance of protecting Pompey's unbeaten run as he looked ahead to the tussle at Coventry.

Pompey have won seven and drawn three of their first 10 League One games but Whatmough knows such a fine start would be forgotten quickly were Pompey to falter.

They'll be tested at the Ricoh Arena by a Coventy squad featuring a number of ex-Pompey players - though not Conor Chaplin, who cannot play because Pompey are still his parent club.

Whatmough told the Pompey website: 'We’re in a good position and have started the season really well, but it is still early doors and we have to keep it up. One defeat and it could all turn around, so we’ve got to keep kicking on and the important thing is where we are at the end.'

The defender is all too aware what an influential figure former Blues captain Michael Doyle, set to play tonight, can be.

He added: 'There are obviously a few old faces at Coventry, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ve been getting on. Michael has been at some big clubs in his career and captained all of them — you can see why sides still want him.

'He’s a massive character and has looked after himself to make sure he can still make an impact at the age of 37. In that group that got promoted, he was the older head and the person everyone listened to when he started talking.'
