Jackett spoiled for choice as Pompey plot to ruin Pilgrims trip

Pompey host old foes Plymouth on Saturday with a squad that most fans think is getting stronger all the time.

Kenny Jackett's attacking options are growing all the time and even without Joe Mason, the Wolves striker signed on Friday just too late to feature against the Pilgrims, he looks spoiled for choice this weekend.

With David Wheeler and Andrew Green battling for starts in addition to the likes of Oliver Hawkins, Ronan Curtis, Jamal Lowe and Brett Pitman, who have all played their part in a fine start to the season, Jackett has choices to make - and one or two players to disappoint.

It means the departure to Coventry of Conor Chaplin, though regretted by some, will not be felt in terms of the strength of the squad.

Jackett must not just focus on attack, and he won't, of course. He knows Plymouth can be a danger themselves after their excellent run last season which nearly secured a play-off place, and will be warning his defenders they will need to be at their best.

He is looking forward to the clash between two teams who have become big rivals in recent years. He told the club website: 'The fact that it’s two well-supported clubs means there will be a special atmosphere on the day. Going back the past few years there has been some rivalry between the clubs, but it’s a healthy one that’s good for football.

'It’s not going to be any different on Saturday. The match will be keenly contested and both sides will be doing what they can to win. For us it starts a series of three home games in a week and we want to continue impressing in front of our fans and bring that fantastic Fratton support we have into play.

'They can really drive us on to victories, although we know we can’t simply turn up and have things go our way. You have to earn every point you get in this division.'

Green, recruited from Aston Villa, is keen to get started on his Fratton career and told The News: 'To come to Portsmouth was an easy choice for me. It’s a massive club to be here and it’s exciting.

‘I need to play regular football. I can’t wait for Saturday to come around now and get stuck in. It’s really exciting. The move all happened very quickly. It was done in a day. But it’s nice to know I’m coming to a club who are going to be challenging this season.

‘We’ve started well and after being here for 24 hours you can tell everyone knows what they want this season.’
