Let's hope for the end of Pompey's nervous and timid phase

Pompey must ditch the 'nervous and timid' football that prevented them beating Burton if they're to get anything at Wycombe Wanderers.

That is Kenny Jackett's view as he reflects on the start of a league campaign which has yielded on average a point per game from the first six fixtures.

Only Tranmere have been beaten so far while the Blues have picked up a point from each of their games against Coventry, Blackpool and Burton. Their task gets no easier this weekend with Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe sitting third - having lost only one of their opening nine fixtures.

Jackett told the club website: 'It’s six points from six games. We’re in 18th position and — despite going through in the cups — our priority is always the league. We’re looking to go further than last season and although it’s still early days, of course we want to improve.

'We didn’t get the result we wanted on Tuesday night after making a really bad start. We looked nervous and timid. I was pleased that we kept going and got a point out of the game. That’s something, but not exactly what we wanted.

'We were searching for a performance and a convincing victory — and we’re still looking for that. We’re capable of it. A win is needed to turn things around and give us a bit of momentum, but I do feel that if we get our game right, we can beat anyone in this division.

'There have been times during the campaign so far when we’ve looked a good team, but just haven’t been consistent enough.'

Pompey have no new injury worries but are still without Lee Brown (Achilles), Marcus Harness (thigh), Bryn Morris (groin) and Jack Whatmough (knee).
