It could have been more - but Pompey are content to sink Saddlers

Kenny Jackett praised his hard-working Pompey team after they notched their third straight League One victory to maintain their four-point lead at the top.

The Blues boss felt the team could have scored more, but was content to see strikes from Oli Hawkins and Ronan Curtis see off the mid-table visitors.

Jackett told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'We had to work hard and Walsall had one or two chances — but we had more. The big opportunity for them was right at the start of the second half when Ginnelly put it over and then we went straight down the other end to score.

'It was an excellent clean sheet and I felt that if we negated them, then we would have opportunities and goals. It’s about getting your timings right and making sure you’re not offside, so we can get people who can finish into good positions.

'Perhaps we should have scored more, but in the end I’m delighted with the result and we deserved the win.'

Pompey had by far the best of the first half and had missed a couple of decent openings when, on 25 minutes, a Curtis cross was flicked up off a defender's heel to fall invitingly for Hawkins to nod in at the far post.

It was 2-0 shortly after the interval when Pompey survived a Walsall attack and Jamal Lowe led the counter-attack before playing it into the six-yard box where a scramble for the ball ending with Curtis turning and shooting high into the net from close range.

At that point home fans might have wondered if this was to turn into a hammering but for all their possession, Pompey carved out relatively few clear chances after that. But at the other end they were never likely to give the visitors much hint of a fightback.
