Early shock can't halt unbeaten Pompey at Rochdale

Jamal Lowe, Brett Pitman and Matt Clarke scored the goals that put Pompey back on top of League.

Their come-from-behind 3-1 victory, coupled with Peterborough dropping two points, means Kenny Jackett's go into October looking down on everyone else in the division.

Yet they got off to the worst possible start at Spotland, conceding in the fourth minute with a superb shot by Aaron Wilbraham from at least 30 yards out too much for Craig MacGillivray to do anything about.

It was a setback for a team who have not been behind too often this season but they soon found their feet and started to boss possession.

Pompey levelled just after the midway point of the first half as Ronan Curtis fed Pitman and his turn and low ball into the six-yard box was met by Lowe for his sixth goal of the season, making him leading scorer ahead of Curtis.

Kenny Jackett's men could not turn territorial superiority into a lead before the break but they went on to control most of the second half and eventually the goals their play deserved came.

There were 19 minutes left when Lee Brown, having another very tidy afternoon at left-back, found space to get forward and send in a low ball that predator Pitman touched in at the near post.

There looked little likelihood that Dale would hit back after that but in the back of Pompey's minds would have been last season's game here, where a 3-3 draw was the result of a match most thought Pompey should have won.

But any thoughts that another win might elude Pompey were banished with nine minutes left when Clarke battled to win the ball from a corner, took a touch to beat his marker then hammered in the third.

So it's seven wins and three draws from 10 now for Pompey - who face another stern test on Tuesday when they visit Michael Doyle and Conor Chaplin's Coventry - with the latter seeminlgy unlikely to play as he is still on loan from the Blues, even though a permanent deal has been agreed.

Attendance: 3,796 (966 Pompey fans)
