Pompey go top but you won't find them celebrating
Sunday, 16th Sep 2018 19:13 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey fans have been warned not to read too much into one result - even if was one that saw the Blues replace Peterborough at the top of League One.

Second half goals by Oli Hawkins and Jamal Lowe set Kenny Jackett's team on their way to victory and Matt Godden's late strike couldn't save Posh.

Gallen told the club website afterwards: It was a big game, although it’s probably too early to say just how big it is. I’d love to be talking about being top in May — that’s the key. It doesn’t really mean much at this stage of the season.

'We’re only eight matches in, but to emerge as the winners against another side that had yet to lose is pleasing. Peterborough have a very direct style of play and the ball was going from back to front an awful lot, so it was important to win a lot of first headers.

'We felt that if we did that, it would take their threat away because they have some very good finishers and the ball can end up in the back of your net extremely quickly. I thought our back four and goalkeeper were outstanding, as well as Tom Naylor just in front of them.

'You prepare for that in training during the week, although we do an awful lot of work with the ball as well.'

After a goalless hour, Hawkins headed in a Ronan Curtis cross to put Pompey ahead at the end housing their fans - his first goal in a season in which he has impressed with a number of assists.

Fifteen minutes from time it was 2-0 as Hawkins squirmed free near the byline and crossed to the far post, where Curtis nodded it down for the handily placed Lowe to sidefoot home.

That seemed like game over but the hosts made Pompey sweat for the last couple of minutes of injury time when Godden got one back.

Next up for the new leaders is a home game with Wycombe.

Pompey (4-2-3-1): MacGillivray; N.Thompson, Burgess, Clarke, Brown; Close (B.Thompson 86), Naylor; Lowe, Evans, Curtis (Haunstrup 90); Hawkins. Subs not used: McGee, Rose, Wheeler, Pitman, Mason

Attendance: 10,472 (2,513 Pompey fans)
