Wembley is suddenly not that far away again for Pompey after a 2-1 win at Walsall put them in the last eight of the Football League Trophy.

John Marquis and Ellis Harrison scored the goals, one in each half, before the Blues weathered a Walsall comeback to progress.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild came in for his debut after his move from Bromley while young defender Haji Mnoga made his seasonal debut and Craig MacGillivray was back in goal.

Gareth Evans was, Paul Downing, Ben Close and Oli Hawkins were also recalled.

Pompey took the lead midway through the first half when an Evans corner was headed down by Christian Burgess and Marquis swept it in from close range.

A foul by Sean Raggett on Rory Gaffney just before the break handed Walsall a penalty but MacGillivray saved Elijah Adebayo's effort from 12 yards.

Steve Seddon and Tom Naylor came on for Kenny Jackett's side in the secons half and the on-loan Birmingham man set up Pompey's second with a lovely cross from the right that Harrison headed in.

Ex-Fratton striker Caolan Lavery put away the Saddlers' second penalty of the night to set up an awkward finish but Pompey geld on without any real alarms.

The quarter-final draw is on Thursday.
