A Rough Guide To Rochdale
A Rough Guide To Rochdale

Another first time visit for most travelling Saints supporters.

Its been well over 50 years since we paid a league visit to Spotlanc and most of the Saints fans who travel on Saturday wont have been in the 300 or so brave souls who made the trip for the 1990 League cup clash, of course those side splitting people who like to sing about having bigger sheds will be in attendance, but they will be somewhat unfair on Rochdale who since our last visit have redeveloped their ground into a compact little stadium.

Three of the stands have been constructed in the last 10 years, with Saints housed in the Willbutts Lane Stand which for a change is a side stand rather than behind the goal and Im told the acoustics are excellent not just here but all the stands, so a large away following such as the thousand or so we will have on Saturday will creater a decent atmosphere, the stand has all the usual food and drink amenities including alcohol, but the fare that Rochdale is famous for is its pie & peas.

Getting There.

Exit the M62 at Junction 20 and take the A627(M) towards Rochdale. At the end of the A627(M) you should be in the left hand lane to turn left at the traffic lights. Now follow the road and with Tesco on your left, go straight through the next set of lights (approach in the middle lane) into Roch Valley Way. At the next crossroads (where the Cemetery pub is on the corner) go straight onto Sandy Lane, where the ground can be found on the right after approx 3/4 mile.

Car Parking at the ground is now for permit holders only, so it is a case of either street parking or using the matchday parking facility at Oulder Hill School. The school is located on the way up to the ground, on the left hand side, along Sandy Lane (it is then a 10 minute walk uphill to the ground). If you do elect to park on the street then be wary of the "residents only" parking scheme, as otherwise you could end with a parking ticket for your trouble.

By Train

Rochdale Station is around a 30 minute walk from the ground and its recommended that you take a taxi, although it is a brisk walk.

Pubs Etc

For a small ground Spotland is well served by pubs, on Willbutts Lane is the Church the main pub for away fans, also is a little fish & chip shop that is very popular,  but there are a few more bars within the vicinity.

Studs is under the TDS Stand, which is the newer of the stands behind the goal and the Ratcliffe Arms is situated on the main stand side in the corner of the car park at the Sandy lane end.

A Little further afield is the Cemetery Hotel, this is again on Sandy Lane (the smaller home end) about a 5 minute walk or so from the ground and is recommended for its range of real ales.
