Blast From The Past - Tony Millington

Blast From The Past - Tony Millington

Tony was a great goalkeeper and an even bigger character for the Swans in the early to mid-seventies. However, my best memory of Tony Millington came when he was warming up before a home game (for some reason I think it was Brighton when Roy Bentley was the manager). He had caught a few balls; when, suddenly he turned and sprinted back to the tunnel and the changing rooms. Seconds later he reappears with a chair in his hand. Just to the side of the tunnel, where the handicapped folks normally sat, was an older gentleman in crutches. Tony offered him the chair, which he accepted, and then he sprinted back to complete his warm up. Over the years, I have never forgotten that moment when Tony Millington showed he was more than a great goalkeeper!

Tony had been my Subbuteo goalie as when I was young I lived near Selhurst Park and he was my hero. I later moved to Swansea and was delighted to find he was the 'keeper. I was chatting at the ground with a guy who swore he'd seen Tony swinging on the crossbar entertaining some schoolkids during a dull part of a game while making monkey noises. Trouble was a back pass caught him out and he conceded a shaming own goal. True? Either way a great story!
