Let's Hope Garry Is Right

So Garry Monk thinks that Wilfried Bony will be even better this season than he was last and that in itelf will be enough to make Premier League defenders sit up and worry about how they will cope with that.

Bony scored 24 goals last season - 16 of them in the Premier League - in his first season at the club following his club record move from Vitesse Arnhem this time last year.

That in itself was an amazing return but the facts speak even more loudly when you consider that when 2013 ticked into 2014 he had scored just 10 times and 4 in the league.

It will be interesting to see what he does with a full season at this level behind him given it took him some time to settle last season and he was being used more sparingly than we would like. 14 goals in the second half of the season, especially 12 in the league gives us confidence that this season we could see a return of 30+ goals this time around which would be phenomenal and a figure that is not matched by many.

It did look for a time during the summer as if we would not hold onto Wilf as rumours of interest from Arsenal and Liverpool were getting stronger and then there was the reports of a release clause in his contract but as it stands now they have not materialised into anything more than speculation and we are all expecting Wilf to lead the line at Old Trafford in two weeks time.

He scored two goals at the World Cup this summer as well which increased his stock and looks from the early stages as if he will form a pretty deadly alliance with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis which could yield all sorts of benefits for the side this season.

It is of course too early to say how they will all link up when it comes to the bread and butter games of the Premier League but Swans boss Monk is confident that we have yet to see the best of Wilf and that just leads us to increase the levels of anticipation and excitement.

Monk said: “I've said all along how important Wilfried is to us and what a good player he is — but I think I can help him become an even better player this season.

“We saw a very good Wiflried last season but with the work ethic he has and what we're trying to do I think he can be even better this year.

“If he listens to what we're telling him — and he does because he's a great guy and a great person to work with — you'll see a better Bony.”

There are still four weeks left of the transfer window and I am sure there isn't a Swans fan out there that wouldn't like to see it slam shut with Wilf still a Swansea player but as we get further into August then the chances of him still being here seems increasingly likely.

There are yet to be any firm concrete offers for the player and that is the way we hope it all stays so we can see him fulfil Monk's prophecy.
