Refwatch Preview: Gillingham (home leg)

Thursday night is Play Off action, and we get TVOS on the case to give you the lowdown on this year's Beeby.

Thursday’s referee has been one of the Football League’s top-performing officials this season, so it’s no surprise to see him in charge of a game in the play-offs.

Kevin Friend from Leicester is the man in question and a sign of his elevated status is that of his 45 matches this season, almost half have been in the Championship.

Last weekend he also refereed the League Two play-off showdown between Dagenham and Shrewsbury and there are rumours in refereeing circles that he will be promoted to the Select Group of officials for next season.

Mr Friend has already refereed Dale this term as he was in charge of our 2-1 win at Darlington in February.

He was also the man in the middle for Gillingham recently, officiating their 2-0 home defeat by Barnet.

However, the last time Kevin came to Spotland was way back in August 2003 when he sent off Chris Shuker in Dale’s 2-2 draw with Cambridge.
