Club calls off talks with Brian Flynn

Home >Story Index> Club Statement regarding Brian Flynn

Swansea City today announced that it had called off talks with Brian Flynn who was expected to take up the role as director of football at the club this week.

A spokesman for the club today said:

"An approach to Brian Flynn was made by the club to join Swansea City as director of football. After initially agreeing to take the position and agreeing terms, to the point where the club had prepared a statement announcing his move to the Vetch, there seemed to be a total change in his attitude. Brian decided to ask for more money and a larger budget for the playing squad. The club agreed to these terms fully and eagerly awaited Brian's formal agreement to take up the position of director of football.

"This morning, however, at the last minute and without any prior warning, Brian demanded that the club also appoint Kevin Reeves in a role that, as Brian well knew, was already earmarked for Nick Cusack as new player-coach. The club owes an enormous debt to Nick, who has provided outstanding leadership throughout the period of enormous upheaval under Tony Petty's reign. Since that time, Nick has risen to the challenge as temporary caretaker manager, along with Roger Freestone. The club believes that Nick has all the qualities to make a superb manager of the future and just needed someone of Brian's experience to make this possible.

"The club is not prepared to cut Nick loose. Loyalty to him is of paramount importance and the club will not be held to ransom and sacrifice his future. Brian knew this from day one and the club is extremely disappointed that he has approached matters in the way he has. It is for these reasons that the club has terminated talks with Brian Flynn. The club will, quite simply, not be held to ransom by any manager before he is in position and especially not over the future of such a devoted and loyal player and future manager as Nick Cusack."
