De Vries Delight At Reading Shut Out

Dorus De Vries was a happy man after finally keeping his first away clean sheet of the season

The Swansea City goalkeeper finally managed to leave an away fixture with a clean sheet to his name as the Swans made it two away wins on the bounce on Saturday at Reading.

After 24 clean sheets last season - a club record - you would have forgiven Dorus for wondering where the next one would come from away from home after a dismal run that was only broken with a victory at Watford three weeks ago.

But Saturday's 1-0 win at the Madejski made up for that and De vries told the Western Mail “You’ll always take 1-0 – and that’s two away wins in a row now

“It’s nice to get that first clean sheet but the victory is far more important.

“They had a bit of momentum going on out there, especially in the second half, but we coped really well with that.

“They had a lot of corner kicks and free-kicks and tried to launch everything into the box. They were enthusiastic about it and got bodies in the box, but everybody competed really well with that.

“We’ve changed our play a little bit this season,” he said, referring to Rodgers’ more adventurous approach than the sterile tactics employed by the Ulsterman’s predecessor Paulo Sousa.

“Our style away from home last year was really defensive with the wingers tracking back.

“We soaked up a lot of pressure by doing that and we didn’t give many chances away.

“But this season we try to score and create more opportunities.

“So we’ve got to be intelligent away from home and get the momentum going at the right time.

“You’ve got to learn with the pressure and how to soak it up.

“That’s what we’ve done here and to get away with the victory is a great one.

“I think there will be many clean sheets and wins to come because there is a lot of potential in this team.

“All the ingredients are in there to become better.”
