For the second time in four years QPR face a journey down to Exeter City for the first round of the League Cup. Here’s the usual travel hints and tops for those making the trip.

By Car

There are two basic ways to tackle this one – M4 out to Bristol and then down the M5 which is the obvious and probably the quickest one. However if there are traffic issues on that route you could go down to Southampton on the M3 and across on the coast road. Assuming most will take the M4 and M5 it’s junction 29 of the M5 then right onto the A3015 at the traffic lights signposted Exeter. After about a mile take the second exit at the Moor Lane roundabout staying on the A3015 signposted for the city centre. At the next roundabout it’s the second exit onto the A3183 still signposted city centre, On nearing the city centre take the fourth exit at the large roundabout onto Western Way, second exit at the next roundabout onto Old Tiverton Road and then left into St James Road where the ground is located. The trip is 192 miles from Loftus Road and will take you three hours and sixteen minutes at the speed limit.

Parking:

An old city centre ground means no car park at the ground, and residents parking schemes in force on the surrounding streets. It’s city centre car parks or streets further away and then a walk to the ground I’m afraid.

By Train:

Exeter St David’s and Central stations are served by direct trains from Paddington and Waterloo with a journey time of between two and a quarter and three hours. While there are no trains back immediately after the match, there is actually a sleeper service at 0114 that gets back to Paddington at 0543. The cheapest tickets out there during the day are at 20 past the hour from Waterloo with a journey time of 3 hours 22 minutes – these are £22.50 at 10.20, 11.20, 12.20, 13.20 and 14.20. Tickets on the sleeper are currently available for £44.50. The town centre is walkable from the ground but there is also a local train from St Davids to St James’ Park itself with a journey time of five minutes – 1927 is the last one you can catch and still make the kick off, 2227 and 0005 are the last ones after the game

Coach

The official club coach will depart Loftus Road at 2pm with a 2.30pm collection at the Target Roundabout. This is priced £32 adults, £21 seniors and young adults and £19 for under 16s. Season ticket holders get a £2 discount on adult coach tickets and £1 off concessionary travel. The LSA coach leaves the Springbok at 2pm with adults at £30 and concessions at £20. Pubs:

The Wells Tavern, Camra recommended, is the closest pub to the away end and had a good mixture of supporters from both sides for our last visit here in 2009. We were in The Duke of York on Sidwell Road before the last match and that was fine – the guide recommends the nearby Amber Room on, and The Victoria on Victoria Road which has the added bonus of a free car park for customers which may be worth considering with the limited parking around the ground.

Tickets:

QPR have a standing and seated allocation for this fixture. There are 500 terrace tickets in the initial allocation priced £17 for adults, £12 for over 60s, £5 for students and under 18s, and £3 for under 12s. The 260 seats in one block at the end of the side stand are £21 for adults, £15 for seniors, £6 for students and under 18s, and £3 for under 12s. There are three wheelchair spaces available for the away fans priced the same as the senior tickets, or less for Under 18s and Under 12s. These are all now on general sale.
