A Good Deal For The Swans?

I am not sure anybody knows what to believe in terms of our current alleged transfer dealings with Tottenham that seems certain to see Ben Davies and Michel Vorm head to North London with Gylfi Sigurdsson returning to South Wales as a 'sweetener' for the Swans.

The newspapers have reported money changing hand from Spurs from anything from £2.5m upwards as part of the deal whilst others have reported and speculated that Spurs may cover some of the loss of wages for Gylfi to come back to Swansea effectively making up part of the deal that is unlikely ever to be confirmed by either club.

The question though that is on the lips of Swans fans is whether this is a good deal for us as a club? We know that the board will believe so or they wouldn't have seen their hand forced even though the rumour in Swansea is that the interest from Spurs turned the head of Ben Davies and he wanted away from the club which is something that the Swans have always factored in as they have been reluctant to keep any player who is unhappy (Michu being the most recent example of this in action)

Vorm was always going to move on the moment we signed Lucasz Fabianski and I guess Spurs probably pay more for a reserve keeper than Swansea do plus there is the chance of him playing again in the Europa League as part of that reserve keeper role so it is an understandable move.

And in much the same reasons for Ben you can understand why he would want to make the move for what is probably higher wages and a greater chance of club success with Spurs often knocking on the door of Champions League qualification.

As for Gylfi we have an obvious hole within our team since the departures of Michu and Pablo and he will fill that nicely and we also know (although it seems plenty have forgotten) how effective he was in his loan spell here back in 2012 scoring and creating goals at regular intervals which is just what is needed.

I am not sure that we will ever learn the full details of these transfer dealings so it will be left to us as fans to speculate as to whether we have done good business or not but I would hope (and suspect) that we believe it to be and although I am disappointed to see Ben leave it is one of those that was probably always going to happen sooner or later given the two years we have seen him develop as part of our first team. And we should never forget that in Neil Taylor we have an international level full back waiting in the wings to come in if/when Ben leaves.

I am sure many Swans fans would like to see more transfer action at the club at this point in time and with the new season not much more than 3 weeks away there will be plenty of action at the club between now and then and I think the next few days will see us show our hand and be linked with moves for more players as we continue our own preparations.
