Memories - Ipswich Town v QPR

A look back at some of the history between Saturday's opponents Ipswich and QPR.

Welcome to the first in a new feature that takes a look back at some past memories of the R’s against their forthcoming opponents and looks at the players to grace both clubs.

This week Rangers travel to Portman Road to take on an Ipswich team right amongst the play-off hopefuls at the top of the Championship. Our first trip to Suffolk came in 1939 ending in a 1-0 defeat, while the most recent of visits also ended up in the Tractor boy’s favour with a 2-1 win over Rangers. There have been plenty of highs and lows in between as we take a walk down the blue and white hoped path of memory lane….

Memorable Match
October 16 1999
Ipswich 1-4 Queens Park Rangers

I remember driving on the way to this one how nice it would be to get a real decent result today against a team who were heavily backed for promotion that season. In the end we ran out comfortable winners on route to completing the double over them that season. It didn’t start too well for the R’s though, as Matt Holland put Ipswich head after just three minutes. Rangers braved a barrage of Ipswich attacks before Gavin Peacock equalised just after half hour mark. Wearing the white kit with red and black pin-stripes and one hand in the air, that image of him celebrating would become one of the most used pictures of that season!

Most R’s would have been happy with a point but in the second half, Rangers took the lead through goal scoring midfielder Stuart Wardley (never rated him!) with a burst from the middle that was so typical of him at the time. Rangers refused to sit back on their lead and went further head five minutes later when Rob Steiner nipped in to make it 3-1. The Swede wasn’t finished there though and put Rangers in dreamland by making it four with eight minutes left to play. One of QPR’s best performances in a season that saw the R’s finish tenth while Ipswich despite losing went on to gain promotion through the play-offs.

Player Connections
Chris Kiwomya
Ipswich 1987-1995
QPR 1998-2001

Whenever I think of ‘CK’ I just see that miss against Fulham from about five yards out during a Monday Sky game that ended 0-0 and I’m sure there were more of those then the glut of goals that he got while making a name for himself at Ipswich. Kiwomya scored over 65 goals for Ipswich and was part of the team promoted to the Premier League in 1992. George Graham then bought him to Arsenal just before being sacked (maybe it was his leaving present!) but never really forced his way into the team and moved abroad. He returned to England with Rangers but despite a brief partnership with Rob Steiner, he never convinced the fans he was 100% for the cause and was part of the ‘talented squad’ that was relegated in 2001.

Georges Santos
Ipswich 2003-2204
QPR 2004-2006

Signed directly from the Tractor Boys, Georges was a typical Ian Holloway player. Big, ugly and eager to get stuck in, Santos divided the fans as much as Holloway did as a player and Zesh Rehman does now. Often a scapegoat for Rangers’ bad performances big Georges still put in some excellent performances in a hoped shirt, scoring some vital goals along the way. And was equally as effective in his season at Portman Road as well. Now playing for Farsley Celtic in the Conference after a brief spell with Alfreton earlier in the season.

Alan Brazil
Ipswich 1977-1983
QPR 1986

Alan’s career at QPR lasted just a handful of games and is more notably remembered as Ipswich player where he spent six seasons and gained international recognition for Scotland. He scored 80 goals in 210 appearances for Ipswich as was part of the 1981 UEFA Cup winning team under Bobby Robson. Now a pundit on Talksport, he also played for Manchester United and Tottenham amongst others.

Others: Phil Parkes (QPR 1970-1979, Ipswich 1990-91), Simon Walton (Ipswich 2006-07 on loan, QPR 2007- present)

Fans’ Memories
I used to go there in the early 90s as went to uni there...was great as they played good football as did we...as i lived there always ended up with the home support in the old Churchman’s stand (about 12-15 quid to get in probably stewdant discount) and got lots of evil looks from the locals...dancing around after sir Les scored. For some reason they really hated Darren Peacock cos e add long airr ohh arrr - Valencia R

2-0 in '83, Stainrod & Gregory. First time we ever wore the Dennis the Menace. The League Cup game in '85 was a scream as well! - Norfolt

I remember a non-descript 1-1 in the early nineties on a Tuesday night (think Devon White scored for us), livened up only by abusing ref Roger Milford all night. Remember him? And we think Rob Styles is attention-seeking these days... Queens Parker

Game about three years ago we won 2-0, the ball hit the back of Furs head and having so much space he turned around and ran toward the goal and just sent in a low shot! - Warfield

Losing 2-0, driving back towards what's known as West Berkshire in an escort van full of drunk pillocks, stopping under the M25/M4 junction so said drunk pillocks could pile out and have a slash, when I noticed the CTV cameras filming said drunken pillocks slashing on the hard shoulder. Spending the next two weeks waiting for the summons, which thankfully never came. It's great being a football fan. Sometimes - Ted Hendrix
