Tim Flowers has once again joined up with Iain Dowie has his assistant, meanwhile there’s been more Irish action for Rowlands and Delaney.
Flowers actually made his Blackburn debut at Loftus Road back in 1993 when a memorable Les Ferdinand goal, wrongly declared as a David May own goal at the time, secured three points for the R’s against their big spending visitors.
Flowers was twice named Southampton’s player of the year after joining them from Wolves. The £2.4m move from The Dell to Ewood Park was by far the biggest of his career and he won the title with Rovers along with 11 England caps. He also played in the top flight for Leicester City before retiring to coach in 1993. He has worked as a coach with Man City and assisted Dowie in his previous position as Coventry manager.
Flowers told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to be here to assist Iain. I like the look of this squad, I’ve seen QPR play a few times over the past 12 months or so and I’m very optimistic about next season. A squad as talented as this one, with a few new additions added to the mix, can certainly go a long way.”
John Harbin, another former Coventry man, has also moved to Loftus Road, essentially as a fitness coach. Harbin has previous experience with Crystal Palace and Oldham with Dowie, and Wakefield Trinity rugby league outfit.
Meanwhile Martin Rowlands and Damien Delaney were both back in action for the Republic of Ireland last night as Trapattoni’s men defeated Portuguese side Lagos 3-1. As I said yesterday with only five defenders in the travelling party Delaney is likely to enjoy an extended chance to impress and he got 82 minutes under his belt at left back again last night. Rowlands, who played three quarters of the game at the weekend, got 15 minutes as a substitute for goal scorer Glenn Whelen. Darren Potter and Andy Keogh got the other goals.
