QPR draw Carlisle in League Cup second round

QPR will face Carlisle United in the second round of the League Cup at the end of August after their 3-2 victory at Swindon.

The experience of being in the televised second round draw for this competition is not something QPR fans have got to experience in recent years, in fact on only three occasions in the last ten years have the R’s been beyond the first round. However tonight, following a convincing Birmingham City win at Wycombe, the R’s went into the hat as one of the seeded teams for the draw.

The R’s have been paired with Carlisle United who beat Shrewsbury Town in their first round match and won 3-2 at Bristol Rovers on the opening day. Carlisle looked odds on for automatic promotion from league One last season but lost out to Forest on the final day and then lost in the play off semi final to Leeds United. They are managed by former Cheltenham manager John Ward.

The last meeting between the sides took place in the League Cup in 1994 when Rangers were a Premiership side. Les Ferdinand scored in a 1-0 win for the R’s at Brunton Park in the first leg and then goals from Bradley Allen and Clive Wilson at Loftus Road sealed a comfortable passage 3-0 on aggregate.

The tie will take place on the last Tuesday or Wednesday in August.
