Finish above Pompey and you'll be promoted

Northampton boss Chris Wilder says Pompey are the best team in League Two ahead of his team's tussle with the Blues this weekend.

Wilder says anyone who finishes above Paul Cook's side will be promoted. At present the Cobblers are one of three teams in a loftier position - they lead the table going into this Saturday's game at Sixfields.

They're six points ahead of Pompey and Wilder told the Northampton website: 'It’s a cracking game for the supporters and it’s one we are massively looking forward to. It will be a sell out and the atmosphere that we get here when it’s full is inspiring for the players.

'We are playing the best team in the division with the best players and I believe that any team that finishes above Portsmouth come the end of the season will be promoted. To be above Portsmouth after 21 games is a great achievement but we know that we have still got a lot of hard work to do.

'The players are enjoying their football and their character, work rate and effort has been absolutely first class. We’ve given ourselves a great platform but we need to kick on.'

Cook, for his part, would rather be the top team playing at home than the lower-placed side doing the travelling.

He told the Pompey site: 'I wish they were travelling to us and we were top of the table — that would be a lot better! Northampton have had a fantastic season and deserve credit for continually winning games, despite all the troubles they’ve been through.'
