Swansea City swimming in certain waters with new signing

It is welcome of course to see the swans moving to recruit new players this summer. Yes, the club have lost enough going the other way, but the free transfer signing of Jamie Paterson does tell us all the criteria the club is operating in, so recruitment has to be even more succinct and appropriate.

It depends where you play Jamie Paterson as to what you think of the signing of the 29 year old. His goal return is one in seven, which is fine for a midfielder or winger, but it’s awful for a more forward player. Obviously the transfer of George Byers to Sheffield Wednesday left a gap, and although swans fans are split on Paterson It is likely his experience and maturity will make him a ‘better than we have signing’ The club have already signed Korey Smith and Liam Walsh in recent times from Bristol City, Paterson with his link to the club makes a third.

There is of course a clear payment structure at Swansea, possibly one of the best or at least better run Championship clubs. Byers salary ( nigh on 11k a week ) was crazy for what he contributed as a swans player. Paterson will be lucky, in fact very lucky to get half of what Byers was earning. So, that’s a positive at least. Money freed up now being spent on far lower wages for the replacement player. That’s sensible.

Jamie Paterson has played approaching 400 professional football matches scoring 65 goals. It has to be said in a midfield position he will bring in more goals to what was a pretty poor return last season for the swans. All Swansea City watchers will want this to be a successful signing, and one which turns the midfield in to a more efficient and attacking unit. Of course, that’s beyond question, but the signing does show the market the swans are in right now. It isn’t a criticism, it’s a fact and that’s why players like Paterson coming in to the club have to be so right. Not only when employed on the pitch, but as we know off the pitch which can be as equally as important.

Paterson does combine well with central forwards when played on the wing, and his assists rate is pretty good from either left or right wing. His disciplinary record is superb as well. All these factors will most certainly have appealed to the swans decision makers when talking to Jamie Paterson, Paterson became a Swansea City player at midday today.
