Derry to be shown the door when fit?

Shaun Derry looks like he could be on his way out of Elland Road.

Fans anxious for the return of Shaun Derry may well have to accept the fact he will be playing his football away from Elland Road, Dennis Wise has revealed that the midfield battler is way down on his selection list.

Wise has also told Derry that when he is fit, he can go out on-loan unless the club is blighted by chronic injury problems.

It is yet another example of Wisey wielding the axe on Kevin Blackwell's senior signings. Last year, Paul Butler and Sean Gregan were swiftly moved on as part of the cull.

Wise told the Yorkshire Evening Post: ""He's not one who's fully in my plans. I've spoken to Shaun about it and there is a possible loan deal for him when he comes back to fitness.

"The problem is that I can't see him being in front of the other players we've got here. I'd also want him to be a lot fitter than he was last year because we've set a certain standard.

"I need him to get to that standard before I consider him, but the door isn't closed and you never know what can happen. If I get injuries in the centre of midfield then Shaun would be a candidate to play."

Derry is still recovering from an achilles injury and has not played since January, when Leeds crashed out of the FA Cup at West Brom.

Derry became a firm favourite with the fans when he signed from Crystal Palace in 2005, his long flowing hair and constant will to battle in midfield led to fans reworking the old Ian Baird chant in his honour: "Derry's gonna get yer!"

However when Palace visited Leeds last season, there was rumours that Derry was the "mole" who alledgedly leaked Wise's teamsheet to the Eagles. After an initial furious outburst from Wise, the manager and club brushed the issue under the carpet and Derry and his agent issued a statement denying that he was responsible and we are no clearer as to knowing who it was if anybody!

Fans will inevitably mourn the departure of the 29-year-old, but I do not anticipate Wisey getting too much stick if Leeds keep up their brilliant form. After all, we can't really say we've missed Derry that much during his lengthy absence.
