Lower back pain 11:09 - Sep 9 with 5680 viewsTheChef

Any tips to help with this?

I was fine this morning till I bent down to get a bowl for my cereal at which point something in my lower back went twang! Sitting down at my desk is OK but as soon as I try to stand up the pain comes through again - feel like a 90 year old! I popped a couple of ibuprofen but otherwise that's it.

Any help appreciated!

Had a similar problem about two months ago, felt something go pop. Pain came on two days later. Went to see a specialist and seems I have a ruptured disc , waiting for an MRI, then possibly surgery to fuse two joints together. Pains in my legs and a numbness down the left side, difficult to walk, pretty immobile at the moment, which is added inconvenience as I can't throw a sicky as I run my own business !!

Seems that when you're young the discs are like sponges and go back in after a while. Over 40 and the discs get harder and take a long time to go back or never. I'm over 50 so I'm well fecked !

Avoid lifting and try to rest. I can totally sympathise. Hope it gets better.

Forgot to add, I had a cortizone epidural injection about 3 weeks ago. Was great for the first week, now all pain back again.

The injection was fun too !

I'm unclear how the cortizone would properly target the damage Ricky. I understood the MRI scan was needed first and the injection, if needed/advised, would follow and be x-ray guided to properly target the damage! Judging by your discomfort perhaps they thought the cortizone would be a useful short option while you await the scan? From what I understand the pain and discomfort lasts all the while the prolapse impinges on the nerve.

For me, the loss of leg use and muscle weakness was most disconcerting. I'd rather the pain than that. Thankfully it's beginning to improve though very very slowly.

Cheers all for the advice. I popped to Boots at lunch and got myself a heat pack and some more ibuprofen. Worst bit still is moving from a sitting to a standing position. Will give it a day or two and see if it clears up otherwise will head for the GP/Physio.

Most go away on their own after a while. Heat packs are good (although hot water bottles do much the same). If you can, lie flat on your back thinking of something nice for an hour or so (SWP buried up to his neck in sand while people kick footballs at him does it for me), then do some light stretching exercises for about 20 mins. Osteopathy will cost you but is very effective for long-term probs.

The consultant felt that the Cortizone would enable me to get active enough to undergo Physio, but as it only lasted a week , I assume the next option was the MRI.

As you say, the prolapse touches a nerve. As the consultant stated, the younger you are the more chance the prolapse going back in on it's own.

I can still walk about 100 yards after which I have to stop, also get occasional spasms.

Try standing upright, feet apart, hands resting gently just above your arse. Stick your arse out and bend over a little (don't worry, this is not going where it looks), then rotate your hips and pelvis slowly in a circular motion and you should gradually feel the lower vertebrae opening up. You'll know as your back becomes less tense and the pain eases. It doesn't work straight away but don't give up on it.

A doctor told me a lot of lower back pain is something to do with the small vertebrae that lead horizontally from the spine rubbing together, usually an age thing, or a build up of sports injury (golf in my case). Suffered with this for god knows how many years until a bloke at work told me about this technique. Absolutely brilliant, barely had a problem since.

I've been a martyr to this for years.

Can I just give you a word of caution on NSAID's such as Naproxen -- the prolonged use of these nearly killed me in March this year as some of you may now from the Frankie thread.
I was taking these for a very nasty flair up of my prola[sed dic issue and was not prescribed a PPI to take with them. Basically this caused a huge internal bleed which required emergency surgery which I'm still not 100% over but nearly there!!! I will NEVER take NSAID's again.

The flair up of my lower back issue has been made immeasurably better by a triple lumber puncture part of which was a cortiszone epidural injection. I had this done the same day by the same surgeon as Eric Lamela (Spurs) who was in the bay next to me. As warned by the surgeon the symptoms got worse for about a week and then it was like elixir from the Gods - not a cure but a blocker. That was almost 5 months ago and although I'm not cured it's given me a "self help window" which leads me onto the next thing -- pilates and weight loss.
Pilates is basically yoga for your core and doing it for the last 2 and a bit months has (I think) helped no end and as others have said, if I go a few days now without doing my stretches in morning and evening I start to know about it. So I really recommend pilates.
My weight loss came from a two prong effort - one due to the aforementioned surgery and one due to having to change my eating (and drinking!) approach for recovery. Happily I've now been able to relax my diet and can have a bit more freedom to drink and eat as I had lost a dramatic amount but again, the weight loss has helped my back and posture.

Finally, if anyone ever tells you to "man up" over lower back pain then please, please, please place two sharpened pencils in their nostrils and bang their face onto a hard flat surface. The fcukers dont know what they are talking about.

I wish you God's speed and all the luck in the world.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

You may find cold packs work better than heat packs. Heat packs are designed for muscular pain whereas anything else reacts better to cold sensations. I would suggest slightly wetting a kitchen T-towel and placing it in the freezer for 45 minutes or so. Then lay down on the floor with the towel placed under your back. Or just use frozen peas.

in my case, a tailored regime of painkillers and time.

had 4-5 sessions of physio, but i didn't see any effect.

took 6 weeks to come right (from omg bed-ridden to clear) and no residual damage.

good luck.

Hey Chef, have you considered trying to insert a butternut squash into your anus? I'm not sure it will alleviate the back pain but it will take your mind off of it for the duration of the insertion. I hope this helps.

Sorry to hear about that. Being limited to 100 yards walk is tough. And I can relate to being hacked off. Constant pain is wearing and your family can't outwardly see signs of discomfort other than difficulties you have moving around. It brought a lot of stress into my household. My physio has been pretty good. We've found movements I can do and have slowly added in activities from walking to 2 mins. on an upright bike trainer. Though the bike trainer set me back so I reverted to swimming though initially limited to 2 lengths only. Am now up to 14 to 20 lengths with on the spot running in shoulder height water for 5 mins. This has irritated the nerve again which has partly put the glute back into spasm though it's tolerable and I now feel back in control. Swimming is mentioned a few times here. Years ago, I swam 5 days a week without a hint of back trouble. I stopped that routine long ago and back trouble crept up when I got north of 45 with the current prolapse the most severe. I have a feeling this time round I'll continue swimming a few days a week. A word on surgery. Do your research and ask about success rates. Friend of mine had lots of metal put inside his back. It stopped the pain though he drags his leg around worse than before the op. He advised me not to have surgery. Though I guess if you show no improvements then surgery might be the only option. I'm currently trying to find out ways of decompressing the spine and one Aussie author/physio even reckons it's possible to re-hydrate damaged discs!

Had lots of lower back pain about 4 weeks ago. Just came on overnight. The thought of getting up from a sitting position, became a nightmare. If someone had videod me trying to get in and out of my car, I'm sure it would be viral by now. Direct warmth seemed to help, ie hot water bottle on lower back, bath, shower etc. Also no sudden bending or heavy lifting. After two to three weeks it faded and went.

Family do suffer a bit sometimes. I can be short tempered or snap, I try to control it but
they are understanding.

Surgery isn't something I would rush into, hopefully the MRI will show up the exact location and type of issue that's causing the pain.

Unbelievable bad luck. I was told Naproxen is a far gentler alternative to Diclofenac, which used to be handed out like sweets. I was casually given Naproxen too though had a supply of PPI's for a pre-existing thing though I don't recall having it drummed in to take the PPI's at the same time. I came off Naproxen only cos they made me feel so rubbish, not just in the stomach. I think your weight loss comment is relevant. Though as you know, these injuries impose inertia and suddenly make active people inactive. I've gained a stone in 16 weeks and started piling in carbohydrates and have been eating rubbish out of boredom. Though now that I'm able to manage a few lengths of the pool it has put me back in control to some extent. I may opt for the jab too if it allows me to start Pilates/Yoga. To me, it's logical to find things that decompress the discs, though surgeons simply say it's not possible. Found this IDD treatment, which I may well try though it ain't cheap: http://www.sussexbackpainclinic.co.uk/idd-therapy

Cheers all for the advice, much appreciated. I think it's just a cumulative thing of getting older / long commutes in the car / picking up and carrying a baby boy. Also I got a nasty kick on my right ankle playing football on Monday night which may have triggered it all (plus tight right quad and front of hip).

Thought it was slightly better yesterday, but I was woken up by spasms at 2am this morning so definitely back to square one today. Seeing the physio this afternoon which I'm hoping will help.

Here's something to think about. A quad or other muscle can seem tight though with back problems the sciatic nerve, in order to protect itself from further damage, can shut down or limit a muscles movement range! I started out not being able to put on socks. Can now just about touch my knees. I complained about a tight hamstring. The physio explained the movement range is limited by the nerve which tells the muscles what they can/cannot do. I suffered 60% loss of use in my right leg and was dragging it around. The right ankle was flopping side to side and I'd frequently fall over. Leg strength is up to say 80% now though the nerve hasn't seen fit to allow fully recovery of use - yet. Spasms, muscle knots and pains are all connected. On my right side I've had muscle spasms from my calf up to my neck. I don't think the muscles will release properly until the nerve decides it's no longer in distress. This condition has literally been a pain in the r's and must be the origin of the term! I've learned a lot though increasingly have a sense I may have to live with it to some extent. Going forward you can also protect yourself by learning how to squat and bend properly so you don't bend by arching your back. Seems simple though it took me a lot of practice to change.

You can simulate that movement with one of these:

It encourages natural posture and is surprisingly tough even on its lowest setting.
