That is sad although he had a good innings getting to 84. He was, quite simply, the voice of cricket and as a comentator he had everything you wanted. Made growing up watching and listening to cricket in the 80's and 90's all the more enjoyable.
Brilliant man. One could almost be forgiven for thinking that the team's captain had an earpiece listening to his commentary so as to take on board his tactical advice. 1989 NatWest SF Hants v Middx, Steve Edwards, myself and others, we won and were well oiled at Southampton Station, and doing poor impersionations of the great man. I looked round and he was standing next to me. He just smiled at our childish behaviour. Shame really, at least these days we'd have got at least a selfie, or a billion view Youtube hits. RIP

My all-time favourite Australian. Too young to have seen him play, but have heard all about him as a player from my Dad. Regardless, I enjoyed him as the absolute master of the commentary box. RIP Richie and I'm glad he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
Ah Richie. Perfect, soft toned voice of my avid school summer holiday cricket watching. In the glorious days when such wonderfully skilled translators of the action (sometimes poetic, sometimes silent, sometimes ecstatic) meant that one commentator was more than enough. Although to be fair I remember my pure glee in later years when he was paired with Boycott for the Complete Opposite Style Dream Team.
And then his final series being the Perfect Ashes of 2005. I remember feeling emotional when he was giving his farewell speech, a modest self eulogy, in his final commentary and was interrupted by Pieterson getting 100 (150?).
The perfect series for him to leave us as the Sky takeover began. He was asked if he would be taking up an offer to work for them and his reply was everything Benaud, concise, understated but saying it all. "I'm a free-to-air man, myself".
RIP Richie. Thank you, you'll be greatly missed.

RIP Richie. The voice of cricket. Loved by Poms and Aussies . And Indians and Pakistanis and Kiwis and West Indians and South Africans. And everyone whoever watched cricket on the telly. A gentleman and sorely missed...
RIP Richie. My favourite Richie moment? The cameraman showed Botham sitting on the balcony at Lords reading a porn mag. Richie dead-panned, "Just taking in the latest National Geographic".
I shall wear a lilac shirt and tie combo in his honour tonight.

An absolute legend and the master of the dry one liner. His commentary as England took the final wicket to win the second ashes test by 2 runs in 2005 was just perfect. All he did was say the names of the bowler, wicket keeper and batsman, but it was the way he did it. RIP.

One of the great things for me was that I never heard him sound biased towards a team.
Too many commentators (e.g. Jonathan Davies - Wales rugby) can barely conceal their allegiances.
The only time and I mean the ONLY time his neutrality slipped was during the fourth evening of the fifth Ashes test at Edgbaston 1985. Australia were batting in their second innings about 200 behind. Botham bowled a bouncer, virtually a long hop to opener Hilditch who liked a hook. Right on cue he put it straight down to fine leg on the boundary. Even today I can still remember what he said. "Oh dear me" he spluttered. "You wouldn't believe it, simply wouldn't believe it. He's put it straight down the fielder's throat" barely concealing his indignance. They ended up at the close about 30 odd for five and England went on to win on the final day (just in time) to go 2-1 and then won the last test to take the series 3-1.
