That's be fair on his day he's a world class keeper, unfortunately when it's not his day he's Sunday league.

Leeds were obviously well impressed. Didn't even seek a fee, just tore the contract up.

His salary off of their expenditure would make that a sensible decision.

He will still need his bench warmer cushion while in Yorkshire!

Smithies must really be scratching his head at how he managed to swap places with Rob Green.

At least that means that Huddersfield won't be in for Smithies until they realise how poor Green is.
Can we hold out until Thursday?

Yeh they signed Lossl from Mainz in the summer. He hasn't conceded a goal yet in three Prem games and made an outrageous save when I covered their game with Newcastle last week.

Thanks.

Whilst on the subject of keepers, is their any top level club which would see Smithies as an upgrade on their number one keeper?

Plenty of clubs should see him as a step up but luckily for us not many seem to have noticed

Well, based on my limited knowledge of MOTD and his lack of top flight football, I can't think of one where he would be automatic first choice.

Last year I thought he'd have been perfect for Bournemouth, West Ham and Everton but they've all spent money on other keepers now. I don't rate Forster at Southampton but I'm in a minority on that one.

Yes, the position does seem to have strengthened at that level. I'm not too sure about Gomez at Watford either, seems to be erratic.

As you say, with a lot of clubs signing keepers in the summer, it's hard to see any likely destinations. Forster was terrible last season but just signed a contract extension.

Dunno why Palace persist with the consistently shit Wayne Hennessey - Smithies would be perfect for them.

I'm with you on Forster.

I would prefer Smithies in my side than those that are playing for Bournemouth, Southampton, Palace, Brighton & Newcastle.

West Ham will still require a new goalkeeper come next season, so they can't be ruled completely out of the picture. I don't understand why they have brought Hart in on loan.

Forster is massive, but is certainly liable to a Greeno type mistake like he did on Saturday

Our old keeper Alex McCarthy is still at Southampton, made just over 100 appearances in his care so far.....outrageous that he makes such a decent living just being a squad player

a bit harsh. The lot of a keeper is a tough one and they're competing for just one position. Up to him whether to get paid more at a big club and play occasional big games, or be a regular at lower level championship club (or lower), surely? I can't blame him for taking that decision. Reserve keepers are vital parts of any squad, especially in training, if not so much on the average matchday, bit harsh to dismiss his 'squad player' status.

Bare bones.

Players shouldn't have to play.

In McCarthy's last game for us he had five put past him. Who needs that? Much better to stay away from goalposts. That would be my advice.
