And ever it was thus. We 'commoners' have been ruled, rogered and ripped off for millennia. We're still basically ruled by a mafia on this planet - a collective of 'royals', 'aristocrats', the super-wealthy families like the Rothschilds and their ilk, and the industrial/banking cabal, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Nestle etc. etc.
The French revolution was organised by the Masons - basically as a means of wresting power from 'l'ancien regime' of Monarchy and church and to institute an enlightened 'new world order', as was the American revolution - so power went from one ruling bunch to another. The Masonic order supposedly had higher principles - liberté, égalité, fraternité were their watchwords - but here we are, a few hundred years later, and has the world changed for the better, or power been transferred to the people? The Russian revolution was backed by American banks and industrialists among others (as was Hitler of course). For the ruling elite, any conflict is a win-win scenario, since they profit in so many ways, and always the bottom line is: divide and rule.
The EU is a banker-run, undemocratic institution with many (current or past) leading figures being Goldman Sachs alumni alone (Mario Draghi head of the ECB, Mario Monti former Italian PM, Papandreou former Greek PM to give but 3 examples).
The eye-watering sums that the EU pay to British aristocrats under the CAP, simply for owning large tracts of land - as specified in the article - are obscene. And all the while, the 'aristocrats', the elite, the massive corporations like Amazon, Vodafone etc. etc, avoid paying tax, or pay a pittance, and yet benefit from the infrastructure built and paid for by the common people. It goes on and on.
The questions are, a) do we care (I see little sign that the majority give a damn) and b) if we do, what are we going to do about it?

Reading that, I am amazed that after two world wars and several labour governments that more hasn't been done to curb this self protecting greed.
Surely it is not beyond our politicians and their advisors to devise a way of tackling this abuse and benefitting the country.
The one thing I found slightly amusing in it though, was that the European Union has been contributing to it as well. Maybe that's one grant that we can avoid replacing when we leave.
