Midweek 400 mile journeys intentional 10:00 - Oct 9 with 1908 viewssimmo

Interesting quotes from footballs top cúnt Shaun Harvey... Knowing these fixtures are intentional is an even bigger kick in the teeth.

Harvey is also claiming his words have been taken out of context by some media outlets. Yet I have checked the transcript and it is quite clear. “We make a conscious scheduling decision to try to keep matches such as local derbies — or those teams you can travel to in an hour or hour and a half — at weekends because more people are able to get to them,” Harvey said. “So, rather than having a local derby on a Tuesday night, where people are generally working and the crowds will be much lower, we work on a basis of trying to get maximum crowds, which can be achieved only at weekends. The flipside of that, of course, is those games at a distance have to go into midweek.”

So every midweek game involves a journey of at least three hours each way and the players getting back home, after away games around 3am.

No wonder midweek games are usually on a Tuesday, rather than Wednesday, to give the extra rest and recovery.

Not to mention the fans, who often can't get home!

Absolutely mind boggling. That prck couldn't be any more out of touch with his customer if he lived on the fcking moon - which incidentally is a lot closer than many of our Tuesday night games.

"It's deliberate in so much as we don't set out to make a fans life more difficult than it has to be".

What a load of hot air nonsense. This man is a perfect fit for RyanAirs PR department.

This isn't going to go down well because there are some pretty committed supporters on here, but the bloke may have a point.

What does a long distance mid-week game cost the host club? Probably something in the order of 500 away fans, which is the difference between those that are rusted-on, attend regardless-types, and those who are medium committed, attend aways if it's not too badly inconvenient.

Whereas attending the Saturday local derby will pull in all those, plus a whole load of home and away fans who attend on a whim, given minimal difficulty. The difference could be thousands of people, and the possibility of turning some of those 'plastic' fans into some-one more committed to their club.

You'd hope that they'd do some market research before making these sort of decisions, and calculate which gives the greater returns.

I think it's the opposite.

QPR v Fulham/Fulham v QPR will get the same crowd whether you play it Tuesday, Sunday morning, Saturday afternoon, whatever. But there will be significantly fewer QPR fans at Middlesbrough/Leeds/Blackburn/Sheffield on a Tuesday than there would be on a Saturday.

In fact here we go, our last few trips to Fulham...

Championship
2016/17 Saturday 19609
2015/16 Friday 19784

Premier League
2012/13 Monday 25117
2011/12 Sunday 23766

This quote is honestly baffling, truly mental that they pick games that are relatively commutable and purposely put them at a weekend, knowing full well that leaves the longest away trips at the mercy of midweek, denying thousands of actual fans the opportunity to follow their teams everywhere without missing work or costing them a fortune.

It's even more in focus as more and more businesses are flourishing by concentrating purely on customer/consumer experience, where as football's fanatical cult following is free to be exploited by complete weapons like Harvey.

But is it significantly different to the home club?

Blackburn 16/17 10846 (570 QPR) Saturday
Blackburn 15/16 12285 (300 QPR) Tuesday

It made the difference of less than 300 travelling for QPR.

But you'd hope that the FA would be using a lot more stats than just one or two comparisons.

And of course this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the TV games are chosen from the weekend fixtures. No, nothing at all. After all, Sky would be just as likely to show Barnsley v QPR as QPR v Fulham, wouldn't they.

I'm pretty sure they announced this a few years ago that midweek away games would no longer be against local sides, been the case for about 3 years now

Of course in that time almost every local derby we've had has been moved for tv to a night or lunchtime match

Bit odd that we always seem to have Millwall at home midweek.

Maybe this needs to be raised at the next Fans Forum by those organisations that represent our fans with a view to getting other club's fans opinions and taking it to the league.

I've raised it multiple times with Hoos. He says anybody who raises it with the league is invited to join the "fixtures working committee" which apparently is a fate worse than death.

Christ these people are paid to run a football club, how about we fcking go to these meetings and air our greavances rather than ignore it because it's a bit dull.

He's the CEO, can't he send someone else?

Stating the bloody obvious but it's never going to change unless someone challenges them.
