Have to admire Denmark though. Job done, Erickson’s got his hat trick and still they come forward playing football. Denmark through and Italy out. Can only be good for football.

Strong and stable my arse.

Surely Sky should be able to drag up a better commentator than whoever this Scottish tube is? Whingeing fcuk.

Bad luck though Brian and co - football's a bastard.

Things must be shit when Nicklas Bendtner scores against you, even a penalty.

The two O'Neills should swap places. Martin to his native North and the other to his native South.

All said and done at least we in Ireland have been spared constant re runs and reminders of Jacks Army and Italia '90 before the finals next year had the ROI qualified.

Just out of interest, will the Irish media hammer them for that performance tonight like the English would in that situation?

Niall Quinn and Keith Andrews getting stuck in straight away. The Irish media long ago moved on from "just glad to be a part of it". They'll be savage.

I imagine they will get hammered, not like the Irish to vacate the stadium before the final whistle.

RTE panel fairly composed. They even distanced themselves from Tony O' Donoghue's tunnel interview with Martin O' Neill, which I thought lacked grace and dignity. O' Neill went up in my estimation for keeping his poise in the face of mindless antagonism.

I'll be cheering them on, too, as ever.

I don't consider Ireland one of the Home Nations but England has been one of my two homes and I have so many friends there that I'd love to see them do well.

I have much more connection to Irish, English, Welsh and Scots players than I do to say Denmark or Switzerland. Go on England. Do the home nations proud

I think this has got better.

When I was a kid the media all used to put up thus show of solidarity for the home nations, but we were all bloody delighted when the Scots got put out of the WC in 1978 - we'd all heard the "England dinna qualify" stuff.

These days we're all crap - well I suppose Wales are better than they often are, but still - so I tend to get behind anyone this side of the channel, even the Scots when they aren't playing us!

I've always had a soft spot for the Irish sides in football and rugby though - not a hint of a family connection, but loads of good QPR players from either side of the border and a lot of personal friends from Ireland. And I'll always have a soft spot for a couple of girls from Tipperary which is a good enough reason

Surprised at the slagging that Martin O’Niel’s getting. He got it wrong but he got them this far so give him a break. Remember that this was a one off match 1-0 or 5-0 makes no difference, winner takes all. The more goals Denmark scored the more chances Ireland had to take. As often happens in these situations the guys chasing the game sacrifice the defence to try for goals.......
and get slaughtered. That’s football.

Strong and stable my arse.

Dear Jesus that song is past its sell by date, dirge is the word.

That song has a lot of meaning to Irish people and goes far beyond the tune. To you it may be a dirge but many others think its one of the greatest songs ever written.
