Really like this lad. Hope he can break into the side and get some goals. If Ollie goes to a 4-3-3 could definitely see him thriving.

Bare bones.

A podcast with him and Alan Johnson would be a coup. And Michael Gove too for balance. Finney could go full Paxton.

A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.

This so very true.

"It just goes to show that a lot of it is dogma. It’s not factual.”

Been this way in politics for decade.

If I was Ollie I would ask him not to speak politics around the club or in public and especially in the dressing room .
Together with religion it is devisive and promotes conflict in what should be a tight team environment.
We have seen on here how intense the debate has been in recent months .

He is young , he can follow another career when he finishes IMO

I have heard there is a dangerous split in the dressing room between the Keynesians and the Monetarists.

Seriously?
Reading that I think Wheeler is intelligent enough when to voice his opinion and when not to. As for giving thoughtful opinions in an interview with a journalist, it's really refreshing. He's not pursuing another career. He has other interests outside of football.

The team seem pretty tight to me. Maybe they're a bit more able to deal with 'conflict' than some of the kids on here.

Bare bones.

Karl Henry let all and sundry know he was a tory without anyone at the club stopping him, since it seems only fair to be allowed to put the opposite view!

I've heard worrying rumours that deep divisions have recently come to a head between second internationalists lead by Wheeler and third internationalists lead by Alex Baptiste.

Seriously ?... Yes

The piece says that he has been in discussion with former team mates so he doesnt seem to deem it out of bounds . He can be a politician when he quits football.

I agree the team does seem tight , doesnt take much to upset it though . We have seen that in the past few years .

Politics and Religion have no place in a team. IMO

Not meaning to start an argument Essex but that is not what you said when Karl Henry was having a political rant about his potential economic situation!

It seems when most people say "politics and sport shouldn't mix" they are actually saying "politics (that disagrees with my views) and sport shouldn't mix."

Rest easy. I can't imagine most of them have much of an opinion either way. Great to hear a footballer having a view on these things.

I've had plenty of jobs over the years where it was essential we could work as a team, and where workplace political debate was often heated, opinions both diverse & deeply held...but it didn't stop us working effectively together and respecting each other. I don't see why a sporting team should be any different.

He's been mature enough to recognise where he's crossed the line in the past; and also mature enough to state that as a newbie at Rangers he'll rein it in more than he did when a well established player at Exeter.

The more varied characters in the dressing room the better imho - a bit of balance to those obsessed with their VIP area clubbing exploits or their golf handicaps.

Diversity in the workplace is generally healthy, it creates conversation, banter, pi$$-taking. If you're doing your job and helping others do theirs then your quirks and idiosyncrasies will be the subject of amusement, possibly bemusement but not resentment.

I wouldn't worry about it. He seems like a thoughtful fella that would be respected.

I'm guessing you had a pop at me first in your wish to defend our Karl's values or maybe I was just still pumped on my anti Henry tirade! Anyway it's all about the love now (mostly).

I would say the line between 'sport and politics' and 'team and politics' is so thin as to be pretty much invisible.

I'd make the same point about political discussions and statements by players as I have done about political threads on here - there's nothing wrong with lively debate, in fact I think everyone having to go around keeping schtum in case someone else gets offended is much more corrosive of team spirit. The issue isn't the subject, it's the way you handle it. Being left wing or right wing shouldn't be a problem, nor should endorsing a party. Coming out with stuff that is blatantly racist or accusing anyone who wants lower taxation of being a bloodsucking oppressor of the poor is a problem because you are personally attacking your team mates. Play the ball not the man and you're OK.

Some of us are of an age to remember when liking the "wrong" sort of music (and dressing in the clothes that went with it) could get you badly beaten up, but I don't suppose anyone would have ever said that dressing as a punk or New Romantic or Soulboy or Ted or Mod or whatever or talking about and paying the music on the team coach should have been banned.

I think Essex has a point, but shouldn't be an issue if handled correctly.

I've always found what works best is to listen to everything a Leftie has to say, have a good old laugh to yourself, and then try to educate them.

Admittedly, that can be a tough call but it's hugely satisfying on the rare occasion you make a breakthrough knowing you've had a positive impact on their lives.

It's just a shame Karl Henry is not here to get that message across to the dressing room.

When I first started my pal who helped me with a car share advised me not to talk politics , religion or football with passengers . I never have , never got myself into any bother . Difficult if they are Chelsea , I just let them talk, zone out and think of the money , so no irony here ..
