Just reacting a bit to Brighton's post in a thread below about 'legends'.
I kind of see both sides of the argument here. Yes, I agree 'legend' gets overused sometimes. But I also think it's a bit unfair that younger fans are denied their own legends, just because they grew up in a time when the club was not as successful - in other words, surely 'legends' are allowed to be relative? Kevin Gallen, for example, was no Stan Bowles, but through sheer appearances, goals, playing at htree different levels, coming through the youths, setting youth records, he deserves the tag? Clint Hill, a rock during awful times, does he deserve the tag? Ale Faurlin? Spent the best years of his injury-ravaged career with us?
I mean, I think these names are bonafide legends no one can argue with:
Stan Bowles Rodney Marsh Tony Ingham George Goddard Gerry Francis Alan McDonald Les Ferdinand Les Allen
That's none from the last 20 years. If that's 8, and you could have 2 more, who would they be?
Jim Gregory Brian Bedford George Goddard Les & Clive Allen Tony Ingham Mike Keen Morgan Twins Rodneeeeeeeeeeeee Bowles Lazarus Thomas Gerry Francis Ray Wilkins John Gregory (for keeping that squad up at our most desperate ) Olly (first stint as manager) EL Tel (best ever manager) Warnock Bannister x2 hat tricks against Chelsea Fenwick Macca Paul Parker Sir Les
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles
Brian Moore
The "last 20 Years" thing is tricky, because most of them have been dire.
Much as I like the nominations for Clement, Venables, Roeder and so on I think the point about legends for younger fans is a good one. It'd be good to hear from some younger posters with some more recent names. A few ideas:
Surely NW's promotion team must be the one that younger fans look back on with pride and happy memories? From that team: Faurlin - lynchpin of the side, lovely bloke by all accounts, never let himself or us down, and ours (who else do you associate him with; Kenny - a rock and of course supporters' POTY at the time; Taraabt - most skilful player for absolutely ages, but a bit doubtful IMO through being a bit of a dick (and not in the loveable Stan sort of way either.)
Then there's Holloway's promotion side: Furlong - hugely loved against all odds; Gallen (as per the OP) Ainsworth - the "wild thing" tag alone tells you his status at the time; Bircham - the fan on the pitch; the skipper Rowlands; maybe Big Dan Shittu?
Gallen, Furlong, Faurlin and Hill would probably be mine over the last 20 years. You could make an argument for Shittu, Ainsworth, Rowlands, Bircham and Cook as well but maybe they're more like cult heroes.
My kids are aged 23/19/13...off the top of my head I reckon they'd say Ainsworth, Adel, Clint, Buzsaky, Shittu, Furlong, Faurlin...honourable mentions Derry, Rowlands, Padula, Austin, Bircham, Langley
