Anyone else seen it yet ? Verdicts, opinions ? (Preferably spoiler-free for those yet to go)...
Saw it today at a 12.20pm show in the Enfield Cineworld - place was rammed out, so odd-feeling for the day and time. I guess only Star Wars could do that these days, plenty around me had clearly taken time off work to be there. Sat right next to a trendy young couple who couldn't stop fidgeting and eventually left twenty minutes before the end of the film. Fomo their motivation, I assume, but bloody annoying.
As for the film...
I thought a decent 9/10 - doesn't disappoint overall, but I'd agree with those critics who've said it drags in the middle. It definitely does, and it's a pity because lopping off 20 minutes would really have made a very good film even better. I won't give anything away, but if I were to be tempted I'd say the surprises lie more in what doesn't happen than what does. Hamill has never been better as Luke, and most of Carrie Fisher's scenes (particularly in the final hour of the film) are almost unbearably poignant. Everyone else in the cast is good as well, it must be said.
If you're a fan, I think it'll deliver for you, it did for me.

Encouraged to read your last sentence after reading others saying it was not as good as the last one - I thought that was OK but added nothing to the original other than replacing a genuinely mesmeric villain with a whiny teenager.
Which was bad because I could imagine Darth Vader holding together an evil empire through sheer terror but I couldn't work out how The New Order (or whatever they were called) managed to sign up vast armies of storm troopers when they were totally trashed at the end of the previous episode and "join the Dark Side and get to work for a bunch of psychopaths" seems weak as a recruitment advert - maybe they just like the white suits, or there's a shortage of jobs for people who can't shoot straight in A Galaxy Far Far Away)
The one thing that kept me watching was Daisy Ridley who I thought had real star quality - bags of charisma. So I'll be happy if she's centre stage.
I quite liked what they were doing with Kylo but then - typical of the film - they just seemed to quickly shrug it all off because they needed a Big Bad again. No idea what his motive is any more, and he's all the more feeble because of it.

Not as good as Force Awakens but still a decent film. Luke Skywalker was great but yeh that milk scene was bizarre. The first scene reminded me of Spaceballs but still funny, in fact the film had loads of genuinely funny scenes. Kylo Ren is excellent and old Skywalker . Not perfect but still good fun and a million times better than the original sequels.
Some of the jokes were good but many were very indulgent and I'd even go so far as to say a little snide about the whole thing... I suppose Disney felt emboldened by the Marvel movies all being incessant ironic millenial sitcom dialogue now but without the necessary structure in the film to support it it all adds to the shoddy fast-and-loose vibe.
Must say I am not a fan of Rhian Johnson generally (post Brick anyway) and am quite surprised the studio have thrown their weight behind him to this degree. This film is so repetitively neurotic about tradition and breaking with the old that it almost feels as though he was forced into doing it.

I don’t care for the new characters and it’s just going to run and run.
Still many questions not answered from EP7, oh well.
Did anyone else spot the force/Jedi books in the falcon when Finn got Rose a blanket. Rey must’ve taken them hence why yoda said what he said. Nice to see puppet yoda and not CGI yoda too.
A nice touch at the end when the boys are playing and the young boy uses the force to get the broom

I liked it, not my favourite but had nostalgia, humour, a good story but maybe went on for too long and not enough action.
I didnt like the return of little "cute" things appearing in the movie. Hated 1,2 and 3 due to the CGI and novelty characters.
Looking forward to the Han Solo spin off next year. Many of the actors working on this trilogy say they dont want to do any more, so not sure where they take these.
Personally, would love to see a prequel with Darth Maul.

I thought I was the only one to notice the books and the boy using the force for the broom.
I loved the film it was slow in the middle. However it really needs that for the future episodes I think.
Maybe need to watch it again and maybe once more to be sure but love it 9/10 for me also

Went to see it at the weekend. The Mrs is a big sci fi fan so I went to see it at the weekend. I thought it was really good and certainly a lot more gripping than lots of other sci fi stuff she’s taken me too (e.g. the Star Trek ones, miscellaneous Marvel bollocks)
Kept sniggering whenever Eddie Hitler the Hammersmith Hardman appeared though.

I thought it was very impressive but I wouldn't say it was a good film. Some absolutely inspired moments but like many franchises, it was constrained by what went before in the sense that certain things have to happen just to stick to "the formula".
A lot of the dialogue was awful, wooden, convoluted and completely unconvincing. I suppose it is meant to be a family film but for me, it teetered on the edge of being a self-parody at times. The actors oftne sounded like they didn't believe what they were saying, or care about it.
There were some amusing and genuinely inventive scenes but it was all too long, too lightweight and too contrived for this old cynic. Chewbacca and his encounters with the little puffinlike things was the highlight for me

Some of the humour was a bit odd for Star Wars film in a sense
It has a new audience now and us oldies aren’t Disney’s target obviously

The “alien walrus milk” scene was the absolute best
Enjoyed quite a bit, disliked quite a bit (some simple tweaks could remove some common disliked elements)
Almost as if it (the film) was a 2nd and 3rd in a trilogy squeezed into a single film. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see what’s left to do in a third in the new trilogy, not what a middle film is supposed to do imo (that the Force Awakens did do for me), make you want to see the ending movie. Failure on that level.

It was messy - some bits didn't need to be there (casino planet) and sometimes it tried too hard to break convention. It also borrowed very heavily from the first episode of Battlestar Galatica.
That said it had some moments of true greatness. The throne room scene, the opening sequence, the luke/rey/kylo scences were all great. And the hyperdrive ramming shot - there were audible gasps in the cinema. Truly one of the most astonishing things I've seen on screen

What annoyed me was the force awakens set up so many mysteries which were really cool and left me wanting to know answers, these were ignored or maybe will be addressed at a later date. Like how/why did Luke’s lightsaber call out to Rey amongst loads of things. it was a bit silly also for Luke to just throw it over his shoulder considering he last saw it attached to his hand in empire ! I don’t think different directors helped

I went to see it with a couple of old mates yesterday, at the Peckhamplex (in... Peckham surprisingly), as a homage to one of the stars, John Boyega, who was born in Peckham. Well, not really, we went there cos my mate lives down the road and it's fookin cheap - £6 quid to see it in 3D!
Which brings me to my first point about the film: I found the 3D to be unpleasant to watch, especially as so much of the film is set in some kind of crepuscular gloom, and things were either in focus in the foreground or out of focus at the back. Not enough light and shade, more a moody middle ground, which kind of sums up the film for me: a Frankenstein's monster of a movie where the sum is lesser than the parts. I think it suffers from several weights around its neck - firstly trying to please an audience from little kids to nerdy and non-nerdy adults. This means you get those mawkish 'funny' little creatures like happy eater emoticons along with the more serious stuff all mashed together.
Like Cider, I was underwhelmed by the main baddie, he was far too wet for a proper galaxy-bestriding, dark side loving nasty. Not a patch on Darth Braindeath. Overall I found the film fairly enjoyable, I'm a fan of the deeper stuff, the balance of the force and all that, but that only highlighted its one really glaring error: as stand-in admiral Laura Dern (who I found pretty sexy I have to say) waves the rebel fleet goodbye while she stands alone at the helm, she says: God speed.
God speed???!!! I mean, WTactualF?? This is Star Wars. There is no God! Disney has let monotheism creep in and I say its on purpose. Next step, Kylo Ren's repentance and crucifixion. 6.5/10 from me.

I enjoyed it. Took the wife, my 13 year old son and his mate to see it this afternoon. Thought it was pretty good film all round. Some great spectacular scenes, some very funny dialogue, good references/homage to previous films in the franchise and some very impressive cameos. Also discovered that my sense of humour might be a little off when son informed afterwards that not only was I laughing loudest in the cinema, but also for much of it I appeared to be laughing at what apparently were not supposed to be funny. I just thought the script was full of typically British pisstake understatement that was probably lost on an American audience (making all the funnier). Agree on the Walrus milk scene as being very funny (if wholly unnecessary and plain bizarre). Benecio Del Toro was very good as was the excellent Ade Edmonson, with a couple of great scene stealing lines.
I think it is very much the Stars Wars reboot for the next generation, but it does well in trying to keep true(ish) to the original films and books. Very much a good 8-8.5 out of 10 film.
