Top 3 Favourite Comedy Characters 18:25 - Jan 9 with 7106 viewsFredManRave

No right answers, it's all about opinions etc etc.

My top 3* off the top of my head would be;

1. Basil Fawlty - Utter comedic madcap genius. So many LOL moments that can be
watched again and again. Pure Genius.
2. David Brent (In the first two series). Very original at the time. A heady mix of
inteligent witty comedy mixed with so many cringe worthy moments.
3. Sheldon Cooper - A bit left field but the timing and delivery of such complex and
detailed scripts is very impressive. Razor sharp wit, imo.

*As OP I have the right to change my top 3 at any time.....

Arthur Daley (oh my Gawd terry, its chilsolm ) George cole is the guvnor , any scene with Arthur is quality , especially when he is in trouble or drunk , I still want a membership to the Winchester club

Del Boy , but only up to 1991, (dates, chain gang, yuppy love, jolly boys outing, he steals the show)

Oz ( Aufweidersain pet) a non pc Geordie , the real sid the sexist , the episode where he smuggles the porn in the coffin cracks me up

special mentions to , trigger(ofah), barry taylor & Wayne (aufweidersain pet), fletcher (porridge) Vince (just good friends) kirk st clair (dear john) Justin james (minder)
brian potter, keith lard (phoenix nights)

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Can't remember their names, but those two Italians who clowned around in that comedy set in West London?

Gianni and Flavio I think they were called.

Interesting that 80% + of the choices are characters pre Sky - who now give us 600 channels of absolute sh1t.

On the same theme we should do our top 3 favourite Cop characters?
Reagan & Carter
Chisholm from Minder
William Rawls - The Wire

Poll: Remy - can he play in the playoffs - who's opening post is the best?

Special shout outs to Bishop Len Brennan, the Major, and Ted and Ralph.

Also, I do like "Shit on it" as a catchphrase.

Those three are easily the very worst in my book.

Real Comedy Actors - must stand the test of time - it's the script plus actors - therefore in order-

John Cleese - Basil Fawlty plus loads of characters in his Video Arts training films

George Cole - Flash Harry, Arthur Daley, Fingers,

Lionel Jeffries - Nosey Parker and Prison Officer "Sour" Crout

Terry Thomas - Raymond Delauney in School for Scoundrels, Major Hitchcock in I'm Alright Jack, Billy Gordon in Too Many Crooks

Alistair Sim - as Stephen Potter in School for Scoundrels and Scrooge and many others

Peter Sellers - as Clouseau, Pearly Gates, all three characters in Doctor Strangelove

Rowan Atkinson - Edmund Blackadder - but not Mr Bean

Ronnie Barker - Norman Stanley Fletcher and loads of cameos - "The Plank" for one

James Bolam as Terry Collier of The Likely Lads

Stephen Fry - General Melchett plus other cameos

I think they were all geniuses. And Harold Lloyd did his own stunts despite having lost the thumb and forefinger from his right hand, in an explosion.
But there have been fantastic, far more developed characters in the subsequent 90 years.

On the subject of Minder: RIP Meic Povery, akaTaff Jones, who kicked the bucket last month. The more sensible and probably more capable foil to the obsessive, easily fooled Chisholm.

Ronnie Barker wasn't in either make of The Plank.

I don't know why people don't like Mr Bean. It is brilliant non-verbal comedy. Very much like The Plank.

Eddy Hitler
Father Ted
All the parts played by Kathy Burke with Harry Enfield.

Which brings me on to my favourite tweet of 2018 so far
Boris Johnson
“I like Toby Young and his caustic wit. I think he’ll do a very good job. I don’t know what all the fuss is about”
Kathy Burke
“Because he’s a C.u.n.t and so are you”

(Kathy didn’t bother with full stops)

What the silent film that Ronnie Barker did? , when he decides to swim on the concrete foundations that he's just laid for a house?

Was it "A Home Of Your Own" - there's loads of top British Comedy actors in that and it's a silent film.

I think you're thinking of "Futtocks End".

A lovely bit of work. I think I saw it as the short with a screening of Hywel Bennett's "Percy".

And here's a treat for you...
