Old Photo's of London pubs 11:31 - Jan 19 with 3125 viewsMetallica_Hoop

For some Friday relaxation. Some are little changed.

Beer and Beef has made us what we are - The Prince Regent

Thanks for posting this - I often look at pub pics and imagine people recreating their hours and forgetting their woes with a nice pint of wallop. Pubs are often characterless and bland nowadays.

Brilliant stuff

The George & Vulture is a fantastic name for a battlecruiser but... how the hell do you get in? Also falling out looks pretty easy at closing!

The London Apprentice hasn't changed much at all.

Lovely photos with real character jumping off the page; but the answer is obviously to bulldoze all this away and instead stick up boring formulatic glass clad boxes. I appreciate advances in sanitation, safety regs and all that clinical bollox but London is becoming a very boring City to look at in places. I'll caveat that with the fact that my favourite London building outside W12 is The Gherkin but as for things like One New Exchange in St Pauls etc... rubbish!

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

As far as I can remember, I can only recall being in two, The Worlds End and The London Apprentice.

Obviously some, probably most have gone forever, well in the original state, that is

George & Vulture still there. Had many a lunch and glass(es) of wine there. Just off Birchin Lane (off Cornhill) in the City. In a maze of small streets and alley ways. Very Dickensian.

Working in the City, I've been in quite a few of those (George, Tabard, Mitre, Old Cheshire Cheese, Grapes, Dick Whittington, George & Vulture), as well as others such as the London Apprentice, Bull's Head, the Archway Tavern (huge boozer specialising in Country & Irish when my Dad took me). Still a few other ancient City pubs such as the Old Dr Butler's Head, Hoop & Grapes, The Lamb (Disco's old favourite), but get a move on, I suspect the next twenty years might take a lot of them.

Yeah same, is that Jamaica Inn also in the photo or am I getting that mixed up?

I've been in quite a few of those, the Bull in Highgate does a great Sunday lunch. Also the Mitre was round the corner from my old work office so was in there all the time - proper old little pub down an alley so most people walk right past it. Still looks exactly the same!

The Lamb is a great boozer

I must seek out the George & Vulture next time in the Bank area

Steve Russell did a piece on the old Westons Cider House on Harrow Road for the Indy R's site a while back.

Sadly, there are few buildings of architectural renown in the rather ugly Borough of Hamersmith ( apart from Rangers Stadium of course !). Fullers, with their lovely pub estate provide a few - the Dove down by the river, the Salutation in Kings Street and many will attest to the sight of the Andover Arms as one rounds the bend in Aldensley Road. For a modern building the Ark by the flyover is interesting. I've always wanted to see inside.

both the worlds end and the grenadier are still there. sometimes use the grenadier if going to a gig at the albert hall before jumping a bus, small pub but lots of character.

Outstanding. The Albion in Barnsbury is still going strong, stronger in fact, as it appears to have annexed the Albion garage some years ago.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I can only recall being in The Grapes.

It looks to have a lot more character than it does now!
